Spinoff: home insurance...those using Allstate
For those of you using Allstate....did they check your credit score before quoting you for insurance? If only one of you is on the mortgage....did they check both or just the one on the mortgage. In our case....DH is not on the mortgage (he's got bad credit). When I inquired about home insurance they want to run his credit even though he's not on the house....I don't have a problem if they run mine. But I don't want them to run his for fear that we may not get insurance. His name is listed on the automobile policy (as a driver)....and they didn't run his credit for that. Any advice? I've been fighting this with the insurance agent. Thanks.

That makes no sense to me. Would you consider using another company other than Allstate?

Yes...currently, I have my condo insurance with someone else...because of this. But, I know I get a discount for having multiple policies (car and home) so I thought I would use Allstate. I even thought about moving my car insurance....but their rates are the cheapest I've found.

Are you dealing w/Allstate directly or w/an agent who runs their own office. I would call Allstate directly if you aren't already. Tell them this is ridiculous and that you are considering looking elsewhere for your car insurance if they can't meet all of your needs. I bet another company would meet your car insurance rates and take your homeowner's policy so they could have you as a customer on both.

Alternatively, check w/your condo insurer about what your rates would be w/car & new home and then see how much you'd save by having one for new home and one for the car. You may be better off w/slighly higher car insurance if the group discount is good enough.I think Allstate has a lot of nerve.

You have no idea! I am working with my agent...who is like 100 years old. I wanted to deal with a different agent....I was told that I couldn't. I called the corporate headquarters and asked to speak to a supervisor....they were of no help. Basically they told me if I want to take my car insurance policy (which I've had for 13 years) I could go ahead...they are not worried about losing me as a customer.
In NJ...insurance works a little differently....you mostly use an agent...and you don't deal with the insurance company directly...which is why I like Allstate because you deal with them.
Ugh....I don't know what I should do....I can't find an agent in NJ to match my car insurance....I've tried calling about 5 different people. The discount is not so much....I may just have to do what I'm doing now....keep my car insurance with Allstate...and find home owners insurance elsewhere. UGH

Re: Spinoff: home insurance...those using Allstate
How about this:Let them run his credit and then see what they quote you. Then you can go comparision shopping with other insurance companies for a rate.
Allstate seems very unreasonable to me.
Good luck w/whatever you do, I hope it works out.
