My best friend is getting married July 24th. Most of my friends are Jewish and I have not heard one person mention this - why would you not be able to get married then?

I heard of something like that... last year we didn't plan our e-party during that time because you're not supposed to celebrate. there's a holiday, not 100% sure what it is, sorry... but we had the e-party afterwards.I would double check with your Rabbi before booking anything!

Oh yeah, I thought you just meant in 2005. I was at a very religious Jewish wedding August 1st and another (less religious) Jewish wedding August 8th of this year. Whatever this holiday is, you won't have a problem finding a rabbi who will perform a ceremony during that time.

Re: Can Jewish people get married on July 30, 2005?!?!?
it's not the same dates every year, it's based on the hebrew lunar calendar. All of my jewish books are packed away but this is form online:Jewish marriages do not take place on Shabbat, festivals or the High Holy Days, because 'one does not mix one occasion of rejoicing with another.' Weddings may be held on Chanukah and Purim, however, because they are not defined as a 'simchah.' Similarly, wedding are not traditionally held on days of public mourning either, for the overriding mood of such days would diminish the joy of the wedding. This includes Tisha B'Av, the fast of Gedaliah, the tenth of Tevet, the fast of Esther, the seventeenth of Tammuz, the period between Pesach and Shavuot, and the three weeks from the seventeenth of Tammuz until Tisha B'Av. The one exception is the thirty- third day in the Counting of the Omer (the period from Pesach through Shavuot), during which time weddings are permitted.
The bold part, is I believe what you're referring to. it won't be the same dtes on our clandear every year because the hebrew calndar vaires greatly. They have a leap MONTH every few years.

Re: Can Jewish people get married on July 30, 2005?!?!?
I chekced a Jewish calendar at ou.orgAnd it's true Shiva Asar B'Tammuz is July 24
and Tisha B'Av is August 14. You cannot get married between those dates. I don't know if reform temples follow this neccesarily, so ask your rabbi,
ETA: those 3 weeks are considered a mourning period for the destruction of the temple.

I knew it was some type of mourning period, just wasn't sure which one... Thanks!

Re: Can Jewish people get married on July 30, 2005?!?!?
You can't, its the thirty days in between lag b'omer and tishebav, a jewish center tried to push this date on us but if you have freinds that observe the holidays they won't come, reforms can ghave weddings on that date, its a matter of how you follow it

Re: Can Jewish people get married on July 30, 2005?!?!?
As others said, the English dates change every year, but there are three weeks between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av which are a mourning period for the Jewish people. I know that Conservative and Orthodox Rabbis will not conduct weddings then - I don't know about Reform rabbis. If you want to read more about the 3 weeks, go here:The Three Weeks

Actually, the time between Lag B'Omer and Shavout is permissible for marriage according to many people, even orthodox.
The Omer is a 40 day period between Passover and Shavuot. Lag B'Omer is a festive day at the 3 week mark of this period, during which festivities are allowed. Many rabbis permit weddings after Lag B'Omer.
However, the period of time that Ariele is talking about is a completely different period of mouring that takes place a little over a month later.

I already fixed my post and I was talking about when I wanted to get married b4 finding out about this. Not when Ariele wants to get married. My point was that the three weeks are still observed by the reformed.
