Veil spinoff - Silk veils (debmaher,eogara,treilly13)

I paid a visit to the fabric mill yesterday and since I was there I figured I'd check out what they had in stock. They had silk chiffon which was really pretty and very reasonable priced, but I was wondering if any of you ladies had pics or could tell me the difference between silk tulle, silk gauze and silk chiffon. Thanks guys!!

Re: Veil spinoff - Silk veils (debmaher,eogara,treilly13)

this is what someone posted when i asked the question

Ok...I know a bit about fabric as my mother was a seamstress for the earlier part of my life...so to the best of my knowledge:

The terms Chiffone and Organza describe the texture and way the fabric is made.
(explaining why you can have SILK chiffone, and Polyester chiffone. They have the same 'look' from a distance and to the average person...but silk is better quality so it will be more soft and flowing than polyester ever could.)

ok..so without being TOO longwinded...

Depending on the look you want...either might work. The average viel is made of Tulle...but a fine quality tulle, because you can breath through it..and it provides vieling without lack of visibility. Both of the fabrics you mentioned would work...but might be more unwieldy than tulle.

*this is all assuming that you want the viel to actually 'VIEL' your face...it would be different if it's mearly decorative.

Chiffone: will weigh down and touch your face
(that's the silky-flowy fabric that many dresses and nightgowns are made of...it's transluscent)

Organza: is a more meshy fabric...with a nice sheen to it. It will have more of the stiffness of the tulle, allowing the viel to lay away from your face...(which may be a good idea considering makeup and all)

I would also concider what fabric your DRESS is made of? If it has either or both of these fabrics in the disign, then it might be a toss up. If it's shiny satin, for example...then I'd say the Organza makes more sense.

Ok. So that's my input.
good luck! Either way, it will be unique and beautiful i'm sure!

Re: Veil spinoff - Silk veils (debmaher,eogara,treilly13)

I cut and pasted this from the Veils 101 link (which someone else had posted in another thread). Hope it helps.

Materials

Standard veil materials range in weight and opacity as follows: tulle, bridal illusion, silk tulle, English netting, organza, and chiffon.

Tulle is the lightest, sheerest, and stiffest of the materials. It has the most pouf and body and is best for very full looks. Nylon.

Bridal Illusion is the most commonly used material. It is softer than tulle but equally sheer. Because it is less stiff it drapes more smoothly for less pouf. This is also made in a glimmer finish which runs the material through a glazing process to create a glittery finish that photographs beautifully. Nylon.

Silk Tulle is very rare in North America but common in Europe . It has the sheerness of illusion but the drape of silk so it drapes very smoothly. Silk or polyester.

English Netting is the heaviest material that still has the look of netting. It drapes very richly and has no pouf. Polyester is the most common.

Organza is a solid fabric that has some stiffness but is sheer. It often has a shiny or pearled shimmer to it. Because it is a fabric instead of a netting, organza must be edged or it will fray. Organza and Chiffon are generally too thick for blushers. Since they are prone to snags, sweep, chapel, or cathedral lengths are generally avoided. Silk or polyester.

Chiffon is a soft fluid fabric which is usually a matte finish. It drapes very well. Like organza, chiffon must be edged or it will fray. Organza and Chiffon are generally too thick for blushers. Since they are prone to snags, sweep, chapel, or cathedral lengths are generally avoided. Silk or polyester.

I found these pictures. As you can see, it's a bit thicker and not as sheer. But it is beautiful.

Re: Veil spinoff - Silk veils (debmaher,eogara,treilly13)

Ok, so the chiffon is a much denser but softer fabric. Silk is a stiffer fabric but more translucent. Am I still going to get the 'flowy' look with silk?

Yes, you will definitely get the flowy look, possibly moreso. Check out Sewdeb's website - she has a ton of pics of all these material veils.

The silk chiffon is the denser, thicker fabric. Silk tulle is more sheer (but not the sheerest) and definitely very flowy...not stiff at all. The organza's and non-silk tulles are the stiffer materials. If you are looking for a not-stiff, very flowy material that is somewhat sheer, the silk tulle is the way to go. Let me tell you, when my aunt took the silk tulle I ordered out of the packaging, I couldn't believe how beautiful it was.
