The Official Mets Offseason Thread

Ok... time to start the Mets official offseason thread since the playoffs are almost over.

I for one.. am excited that they now have Omar Minaya as their president and GM. They tried to get him last year... but Omar refused the job because the Mets wouldn't give him the front office power he wanted.

For those that don't know... Omar was running the Expos for a while and developed and traded/drafted players such as Vasquez, Guerreo, Vidro, etc. This is exactly the type of guy the mets need.

As far as the Mets offseason goes... they have a few options...

Possibly Trade Piazza (probably for another hi-salaried guy thats currently unhappy - Sosa and Helton come to mind).

If they trade Piazza... they need a catcher (Varitek?)

They need a legitimate lefty set-up reliever (Stanton just sucks)

They need to figure out what to do with the outfield...
- Do you re-sign Hidalgo (for cheaper?)
- Do you keep or trade Cliff Floyd?
- Do you go after a FA (like Beltran or trade for somebody ala Sosa?)

As far as the infield goes... they are pretty good. Wright will play 3rd. Reyes will play SS. Kaz will play 2nd.

They need to figure out the 1B deal. I see Phillips being traded if Vance resigns. Again... if they trade Piazza for Helton... then Helton plays 1B.

Well... just some random thoughts.

How to you feel about Willie Randoph being the new manager. The papers seem to say that he's a favorite for the job.

Re: The Official Mets Offseason Thread

I'm not sure if the Mets will be able to trade Piazza. If they can, they are going to have to eat up a lot of his contract.

I say they get rid og Hildago and Floyd - if you can. It's time for them to start getting younger.

I'm unsure of Wille Randolph as Mets Manager. I think they need someone who's vocal who can inspire better play. I'm not sure if he can do this or not.

Re: The Official Mets Offseason Thread

Screw Willie.

If they trade Piazza... it will probably be for somebody else that has a big contract so they theoretically won't have to eat anything.

Thats why Helton and Sosa come to mind. Sosa might not be a bad option since I think he only has one year left. But Helton is due a ton of money for a few more years so he would be a longshot.

Re: The Official Mets Offseason Thread

I agree - forget about Willie, but it looks like it's going to happen.

I think a change of scenery may be good for Sosa, but we have to build for the long term and stop picking up All Stars of the past.

The only chance of someone wanting Piazza is a team in the AL who can use him as a DH. Being that I read in Newsday the Mets want him to end his career as a Met, I guess we can forget about any trades. Let's hope Omar can work some magic at the Winter Meetings.
