candy, cookies, flavored oils for salad, a set of note cards, x-mas ornament, personalized frame.

Those mason jars filled with cookie mix are cute and pretty cheap to make. You can even cut out a pretty piece of fabric to wrap on the top of the lid with ribbon. If you have an extra $ or so, you could include a cookie cutter too.

that is cute, but how do I go about doing something like that? Is there a step by step guide somewhere?

Pick up the December/January issue of FamilyFun magazine. They have a whole section of gifts you can make.
Some of them are along the lines of the cookie mix... like Granola, cranberry pecan muffin mix... corn muffin mix.
