Birth plans

Has anyone or is anyone going to be doing a birth plan? I didn't do one with my son and I'm wondering if I should do one for this baby because there were some things that happened during labor that I didn't want to happen and I was just too out of it to really know what was going on. Do the Dr's and nurses really look at it, or is it a waste of time?

Absolutely, let your husband be your voice, because chances are you'll be too into labor, breathing, etc, and the docs will forget to ask, so name him as your representative.

You should speak to your doctor with your husband...go over what happened that you are hoping to avoid this time around. Write it out....ask the L&D nurse to give it a quick read when you get there. Of course, anything can happen during labor but you have every right to ask that certain wishes be respected.

i am also thinking of doing one. Nothing major, just a few simple things. Would you mind giving us an example of the things that happened that you want to avoid this time?

Some examples of things in a birth plan can be

Pain Medication- please do not offer me pain medication unless I ask you about it.

Please do not do a pelvic exam during one of my contrations (this is your right and you should discuss with your doctor/nurses)

If I ask for a moment to collect my thoughts please respect that unless there is an emergency situation

I will not allow any interns in my room to 'watch' or 'help' so please respect this decision

Please discuss all procedures with me before doing them, baring any emergency situation.

If I need to have a c/s I would like the following:
Do not tie my hand down during surgery
I would like to breastfeed while on the OR table
Please allow my husband to announce 'it is a boy or girl'
It is very important to me that you allow me to hold and kiss my baby for as long as possible during surgery

These are just some examples of what you can include.
