Seal walk at Jones Beach?

Someone had posted last weekend that they went, and I want to go this weekend! Has anyone gone, and have you seen seals? I really hope if we do go that we see some seals...Last Feb. I dragged my DH (FH at the time) all around the Montauk Lighthouse looking for seals and we never saw any...

Re: Seal walk at Jones Beach?

I happen to live and drive by Jones beach everyday to work and sure enough I saw one bopping in/out of the water. My FH is a hard core fisher/boater and living in Island Park all his life mentioned to me how we have seals come around this time of the year. We drove by the back end and we saw about 3....looked like bowling balls peeking out of the water. So cute too!

I just called, we are going Saturday at 10:30! You meet at the Jones Beach nature center and then go on a walk around the beach to the areas where the seals hang out...

$3 a person! Nature center is apparently right near the tower--she said we would see signs. Here's the number to call to make reservations--we are going this Sat. at 10:30 if anyone else wants to come! 516-679-7254

ETA: I think they have it every weekend this time of year.

Thanks for the info.

Do you see anything else besides seals? Just curious in case we aren't lucky enough to see the seals.

When you say the back end, do you mean West End 2--past the little booth guy.....??? I'm not far from there either, I'd love to take a ride and look....

Re: Seal walk at Jones Beach?

I'm the one who went last weekend! You don't have to sign up and do the $3 tour to see the seals. For the fee they give you a brief talk on seals, so if you are interested do it if not just go see the seals yourself!

To see the seals park at Field 10 (fishing piers) and follow the people. It's a bit of a walk along the beach, down to the area near the rocks. The seals are often near the green bouy. Bring binoculars or a video camera (to use the zoom on it). We saw about 3 of them bobbing in the water...very cute! Oh yeah, bundle up!

I would love to do that! What month are they around here until? I don't think I have time to go until Feb.
Beth make sure you post pics. I love seals. I always though Gizmo looks like a seal (now everyone thinks I am crazy)!

A very furry seal who dresses up! His little eyes kind of look like one!

Yes, his eyes are the same shape as a seals and the little black nose! he also has black lips and similar whiskers, althogh Gizmos are furrier.
OK now it REALLY sounds like I lost it!

Re: Seal walk at Jones Beach?

I know this is an old post, but I just called J.B. Nature Center b/c I can't make it to the official seal walk - work gets in the way! There are more:

1/23 1:30-3
2/5 10:30-12
2/26 10:30-12
3/5 10:30-12

but if you're like me and STILL can't make any of those dates, I spoke with a really nice woman who gave me directions on how to go see them myself. (The seals usually hang around til St. Patty's Day)

Park in field 10.
Near (to the left) of the parking lot, there is what looks like a work area - trucks are usually parked there. Walk through that area until you come to what looks like a dead end - look to the right, there's a little hill that goes down to the beach.
Once you're on the beach, walk to the left, towards the green buoy. The seals are usually bobbing between the buoy and the shore.
She said *Bring Binoculars*
AND VERY IMPORTANT: you must go during low tide - if the tide is high, you can't access the beach b/c it is covered with water! (check the paper for the tides)
If anyone does this and has problems, you can call the nature center at 516-679-7254 - they'll help you out - they were SO NICE!!!

I'm going Sat. afternoon
