Re: Is anyone else buying a home for over 400k and getting married?

My wedding was last August and we have been saving ever since to buy a house in Nassau County. It is so fustrating sometimes I feel like it is impossible to live on the island, I am trying not to give up hope. You do the same, I check MLSLI.com like almost everyday.

We are in that boat - or should I say me since I started the house thing before FI proposed and he is not paying for it. He knew all about it though. It's a new construction in VA.

Although I can't say we're strapped for cash since it's a construction loan and no payment will be due until after June of July when the loan rolls to a permanent mortgage, I know how you feel. Thinking about wedding expenses and what I could do with the money otherwise does concern me. But I still want my Villa Lombardi's or Giorgios wedding reception so I'm sucking it up. But I did cut out limos and may cut out the high floral centerpieces FI loves (from a Russo's video) and just do rose petals and votive candles.

It's a reimbursement loan so I only get cash after something had been completed - and after inspection.

We are actually in the process of going into contract for a house over that price and getting married in July.. the stress is starting to set in, but we know we have the money and know we can do it.. it just seems overwhelming at some points, but in the end it will all be worth it!!!

Re: Is anyone else buying a home for over 400k and getting married?

I totally know what you mean! We closed on our house in Commack that was over 400,000 on September 1 and our wedding is in August. Everything I have is going towards the mortgage payments.... and I really really want the trumpet players at the church!

There are so many things I want to do, but can't. We went so over on the hall (Which I totally totally love) and I am so strapped for money! My parents are paying for a large part of the wedding but I still feel sooooo strapped!

I know exactly where you are coming from...We have not yet found the house we want, but we have been eagerly looking....I keep asking FH how we are going to afford the mortgage & pay for our wedding that is still over a year away!

He tells me we can do it, but I am so nervous!

I took these while home for Thanksgiving....

They have made a lot of progress between then and now.

The house is 3705 sq feet - 519 sq ft of that is the garage though.

The builder had these pics e-mailed to me a few weeks ago.

I know how you feel- it stinks- but it's all worth it in the end. Maybe you could cut corners somewhere to offset some expenses.

Re: Is anyone else buying a home for over 400k and getting married?

FH has a house from his previous marriage (yes, kinda creepy and we'd like to move). Granted it is VERY small... about 1000 square feet. I am paying for the entire wedding but my car lease is also up one week before . We'd like to buy a real cheap car outright since we are hoping to get preggos right away and I have a good distance to commute (I'll be 35 and he'll be 37). While he does have the house he was separated from his ex for three years... she got half of all the the increase in value since they had it (over $100,000) so we are back to square one with that mortgage and if our baby plans go the way we hope we'll outgrow that house completely in no more than three years. Also we've had to do so much to it.

In one year so far we've spent:

1. wedding approx 25,000...hahaha. yeah right.
2. car 17,000 (maybe the new Corolla)
3. new kitchen (very small out share rest was wedding present from FIL's) 15,000. The old one was original 1957 with harvest gold appliances... hello 70's.
4. now a new boiler 3,500

Grand total... $62,500 spent by July of this year

If I don't single-handedly turn this economy around... I want a thank you letter from the president and Alan Greenspan

We closed on a house in Commack November 1st! It's been crazy especially since the wedding budget has gone up like 10 or 15k I had originally planed for.
I don't know where were gonna come up with all this $.
I think I'll be getting a 2nd job soon to cover so of the extra costs. Like high centerpieces I now have to have!

Re: Is anyone else buying a home for over 400k and getting married?

I feel so bad for anyone our age who trys to tackle wedding and house buying together!! I'm so unbelievably fortunate because I bought my house 5 years ago when you could still find a reasonable price. I know what I paid for my house, and what I could get for it today....and I don't know how you girls are doing it!!! I applaud you all!!

The only reason I bought my house was because I was sick of renting and begging landlords to be accepting of my large lovable dog...so I said screw you all, I'll by a house. Thank god I did! Plus, then I met FI, who also had a house - which we now rent out. Combined, we're really fortunate....and we're very aware of that!

Good luck to everyone! It's worth the sacrifices - I love my home (the fixer-upper that it was!)!

At least for 400K you get a decent sized house on LI. Try looking in northeast Queens where an attached home goes for well over 500K!!!! Thank goodness FH bought a co-op a couple of years ago, so we have a plce to live for a while after the wedding. He paid 138K for it and it appraises for over 210K now! Real estate is insane!

Great deal!!! Real estate is the best investment. I have yet to see property values decrease in NYC.

My dad says I "stole" my coop. It was a foreclosure that I had renovated & it's worth over 5 times what I paid for it in 1997.

Re: Is anyone else buying a home for over 400k and getting married?

We are currently house hunting here in LA but really discussing moving. Starting houses are over 650,000 and even with both our incomes, and the down payment when I sell my condo that is still heavy payments. I would love to be a stay at home mom but not at those prices.
Even with with smaller mortgage right now, I am still struggling hence the DIY centerpieces and no pro video. Other than my band, I really didn't splurge at all on the wedding. But owning your own home is worth it, believe me. Knowing I have a lot of equity to fall back on makes me feel so secure.

We do own a home in PA. But it is a vacation rental. We are not selling that b/c it will give us profit in the future. So now on top of that mortgage we willhave another one.
