Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

I registered for stainless steel flatware that is about $40 per 5 piece plate setting. It's really pretty, so I'm very happy with it but here's my question. Is this now my 'fancy' silverware and do I only use it for special occasions? Do I still need to register for something that's for 'everyday' or is it okay to use this everyday since it's stainless?

here's a link to it if that helps: Gorham Ribbon Edge Frosted

Re: Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

We registered for a Gorham set also from Fortunoffs and then did an everyday set from BB&B. We will use the Gorham set with our China.

Re: Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

We also registered for the Gorham set, but not the frosted one. Our intention is to use it as both everyday and 'fancy.' I just can't see having flatware sitting in a drawer for use one or twice a year. At least we can display our good china in a china cabinet, but I'm not sure about a 'flatware cabinet.' LOL :)

Come on! Just think-- you can get one of those magnetized wooden boards like they have at Fortunoff!

My finger always gets caught between the silverware I'm trying to put back and the wood. That board is a hazard!

Re: Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

This is a good question! I had always assumed we'd register for real silver flatware to go with our fine china but then we saw the prices and quickly changed our minds! So we are registering for a stainless steel set that will probably only be used for nice occasions. We already have an everyday set, though IMO, I am not sure there is going to be much of a difference between the two - they're both stainless steel.

Re: Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

Want to talk about hazards? My fiance and I were creating our Fortunoff registry this weekend. While perusing the housewares section, FI called my name and when I turned, blood was literally gushing from his hand. He'd cut himself on a razor sharp steak knife! I've honestly never seen so much blood. Off we went to the hospital for stiches (the doctor said he was lucky he didn't completely cut off the tip of his finger).

Re: Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

I registered for the same set, not frosted. I already have my mom's china and my everyday dishes (mine have barely been used while I was living with Dad and taking care of him). I did register for an everyday set as well.

If you buy the entire service you get a wooden storage box for free. My FMIL bought it for us as an engagement gift. Honestly, the ones for purchase are nicer and have a separate drawer for the serving pieces but in the scheme of priorities its on page 10,000 of my list.

Re: Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

Ewww, sorry - I hope your DF is ok.

As for registering, we registered for Reed and Barton Sterling in Francis I and for stainless too (Cambridge chop). FYI - I was told that the price of sterling is going up after 2/28 at Fortunoff's.

Cambridge chop 20 piece service for 4 $59.95 and Cambridge chop 45 piece service for 8 $129.95 (so $190 for 12 settings of 4 pieces) or $15 per setting.

and

Reed & Barton Francis 1st 5 pc. place setting with place soup for $139.95 per setting.

Lisa

ETS: I realized that I did not answer your question; you can use what you registered for as either everyday and good silverwear or register for sterling and keep that as your everyday set.

We went for the less expensive every day set and my grandma just told me that she is purchasing the sterling as part of our wedding present from her. So I changed the registry to read as 21 sets b/c they are less expensive and you get the hostess set for free.

Re: Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

FH and I also registered for the same flatware, Gorham Ribbon Edge Frosted at Fortunoff, which we plan on using with our fine china. We registered for a contemporary casual set made by Oneida to go with our everday casual dinnerware. I figure it is nice to take out semi new stuff for special occasions and not something you use everyday. But since it is stainless you can definitely use it everyday and it is real nice so why not.

Re: Registry Spinoff--Stainless Steel Flatware vs. 'Real' Silver

We registered for stainless from Ralph Lauren. FH already has a full set of casual stainless that he bought little by little, some of which is still boxes and I have almost a full set myself, so we will continue to use what we have for everyday and what we registered for will be more for special occasions. We just happened to like something that was stainless.

I registered for the Gorham one too but to go with my China. I registered for a different pattern for my everyday. From the everyday section in Fortunoffs.
