Getting baby dressed for Christening
My MIL wants to come help dress Kiera tomorrow before her Christening. She is also asking us if the godparents are coming to watch. I have never heard of this tradition before. I have 2 godchildren and I never saw them get dressed. Has anyone heard of this? Is it wrong of me to say no because I want to be the one to dress my daughter for her Christening not her?

Re: Getting baby dressed for Christening
I'm not a mommy or mommy-to-be but I am a Godmother. At the Christening I dressed my goddaughter, the family and the godfather were present (he was totally afraid to hold the baby so he never did!). They said something of it being a tradition (not sure if it was in general or in the family).

I dressed my neice (goddaughter) for her Christening, but your the mommy! You decide what traditions you want to continue or change!

Re: Getting baby dressed for Christening
Yes generally the godmother dresses the baby. But if you don't like that tradition you don't have to do it. I dressed both my godchildren and considered it an honor.

Re: Getting baby dressed for Christening
The problem is it's my MIL that wants to dress her, not the godmother. She's just asking us if we are having the godparents there.
I guess I missed out on dressing my godchildren. I was never asked by the parents. I bought their outfits but they never said hey come on over and help the baby get dressed.
I just really wanted to dress Kiera because she's wearing the gown that I wore for my Christening.

So why don't you tell your MIL that it's really important to you that you dress her yourself, but that she can come over. (Unless, of course, you don't want her to)

At Caiden's Baptism the Godmother dressed him. I believe that's how they do it!

If my MIL was a rationale person, that would work. She always thinks what she wants is the way things should go. So if I tell her to come over, the whole time she's going to be asking if she can dress her. We already tried explaining to her the timing isn't going to work for us because we need to get to the hall before we go to the church. PLus we have errands that we have to run in the morning. But she didn't understand that.

Re: Getting baby dressed for Christening
Aw!! I hope it works out, I dont blam you for wanting to dress the baby though. I never heard of it before and I dressed my son for his. With my daughter, I had then heard of it and asked my SIL but she got stuck in traffic so I ended up dressing her too and I did enjoy it both times.

I got to dress my god daughter. And my godmother dressed me. I am glad I got to be a part of such a sacred day.

Re: Getting baby dressed for Christening
We spoke to the godmother and she said that she just wants to meet us at the church. My MIL never actually called us to ask if she can dress Kiera so I did all of that worrying for nothing. I guess she got the hint last weekend when we told her that the timing just wouldn't be right.
Thank you everyone for your advice. I really appreciate it.
