Ok, Oscar is so cute. What a great name. How old is he??? My parents have a dachshund. They are great dogs. Very loving. You can see Nathan (my parents dog) to the left. I love him so much!!!!!

Yes, I noticed Nathan in your other posts. He is so cute!! Oscar is a year old. I had a dachshund before. My other dog's back problems were terrible but he lived a long time. I hope Oscar does not have such problems. Any issues with Nathan's back? It's so common.

Actually, yes he had back problems. not severe but we had to take him to the vet. My parents actually built a ramp for him in the bedroom so he doesn't have to jump on and off the bed. They love to jump.

Well, I want to find a dachsie for him to play with--I've heard that dachsies usually like each other a lot.Anyway, the potential back problems have me so worried. I guess it's because I went through so much with my last dachsie. Oscar jumps so much. It may keep him limber but it may hurt him. I wonder if I could teach him to use a ramp.

You can definitely teach him to use a ramp. Nathan is so stubborn and we did. Sometimes he jumps off the ramp at the low part of it, but its better than jumping of a high bed. Its so hard with dachsies because they just love to cuddle and be with their owners.

Re: finally a photo of Oscar
Did your parents build their own ramp or did they buy one? My FH is very handy, but he has so much other work to do so I am not sure if we should just buy a ramp. I talked to him yesterday and if we build a deck in the yard he will build a ramp into it. So, Oscar is determining the design of our house!!!

Re: finally a photo of Oscar
Yes. My parents built it and then we got leftover carpet from my job and glued it on. When i get a chance ill take a pic of it and post it for you. Its really good for nathan's back too because he is overweight. 23 lbs. plus he is 9 years old.

Re: finally a photo of Oscar
I'd love to see the ramp. I really want Oscar to have one. He's not allowed in my bed but he is allowed on the couch. I have a chair that I was not going to let him on, but the chair is near the door and he jumps into that chair before very walk. Then at that point, he is at a god height for me to put the leash on, so it would be convenient for me to keep letting him on that chair. Also, he looks really cute in the chair!I think it is good that your parents' dog is 9 years old without serious back problems. It sounds like he;s only had 1 or 2 bad episodes. My friend's dachsie is almost 5 and had 2 surgeries already but now he is great! (I never get to see him though, they are far away). My last dachsie was about 6 when he had surgery.

Yes, Oscar Meyer wiener!!!!My last dachsie was named Lengthy, named after a childrens' book about a dachshund.
There is another childrens' book about a dachshund named Pretzel.
Dog names are fun!!!!!! There have also been some especially cute names of the dogs on TV sitcoms!!!
