Avatar Pic Question

I finally got around to changing my avatar pic and it worked for awhile, but today I notice it is back to my original one. What happened? Can someone tell me how to permanently change the pic?

(You would think that after being on the boards for a year I would know this!)

That's weird! I see a white and black compass!! Invitations is what I wanted to show. I am confused.
