hand stamped invites at the post office

I am bring my invites to the post office tomorrow. I want them cancelled by hand. How does that process work out? Do I bring the invites to the window and does it cost extra? I did not buy stamps for the invites yet, so when it is hand stamped is the postage marked as well?
TIA!
Jan

Re: hand stamped invites at the post office

Apparently it depends on the post office as to whether it costs extra. I didn't pay anything. I also did it myself, though. I just asked them for the stamp, they did one as a sample, and then I stepped to the side and handled it for them. It made their lives easier since there was a line of people behind me and this way I didn't have to stress that they weren't going to do it.

Re: hand stamped invites at the post office

I handed in one invite and they calculated the postage then I bought the correct postage, took them home, took them back the next day and handed them to the counter person...they didnt mind....Warning: Please make sure they check and double check the postage as I mailed all mine save one at one post office and when I went to a diff post office they said the price was more... so now the waiting game begins to see if they all start coming back....

Re: hand stamped invites at the post office

I took one of my invites to the post office and had the weigh it to tell me how much postage it needed. Then I bought the stamps and put the stamps on all the invites.

Then I brought them back to the PO and asked them to hand cancel them.

The benefit of having your invites hand cancelled is that they wont be run through the machines and rish the possibiity of getting stuck. My friend had hers run through the machine and they were so think they were stuck and some were delivered all torn and others were never delivered at all!

I went to Sayville Post offices and they did it for free, no problems at all.

The same for me. I went to a post office that one of my BM's know one of the girls in there. She let my BM come in, show her how to do it and My BM did all of them for me.

Yes, it's called hand cancelling and all you have to do is say that you want it done. Not all PO's do it and not all are free, so your best bet would be to call the one you're interested in...I took mine to the one in E. 53rd St and 3rd Ave (FDR Main PO).

Re: hand stamped invites at the post office

The person at our PO was/is so nasty, that DH did not even ask. We just mailed them the regular way. Nothing happened to any of ours as far as I know. I don't think people spend that much time inspecting the outer envelope, JMO.

Yes, it still gets a stamp. Hand cancelling simply means that the stamp is voided by hand, as opposed to cancelling it by running it through the machine. They cancel the postage so that the stamp can't be re-used.
