Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

I don't know, but you can go to the NYS Education Department site to access school report cards, which will give you info about how the kids did on last years' state tests. That's usually a decent place to begin.

Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

Mastic is not the greatest area in the world. Schools are not that great either.

William Floyd. My brother teaches in William Floyd and says that the kids are worse than Brentwood (where we went to school and grew up)

Agreed. My SIL used to work there and had to get out after one year. Bad administration, (some) bad kids, and average performance/scores are bad.

My two SILs live in Rocky Point and they said the schools there are very good - and you can still get a nice house for a decent price.

Rocky Point I believe uses a different district than Mastic (William Floyd).

Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

My mother works for DSS and has tons of clients in Mastic. There is tons of section 8 housing in the area as well as many group homes. The school district, William Floyd is not a good district by any stretch of the imagination.

Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

William Floyd grad here, the school isn't that great. It is more of the element in the school than the programs themselves. JMO - I wouldn't send my kids to school there. Mastic Beach isn't a great area and some parts of Mastic are pretty scary too, and I grew up there. However, there is an area in North Mastic called Manor Park, which is nice and the school district is South Manor. South Manor is a great district. So if I were to buy in Mastic, this is the only area I would consider.

Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

I have family who grew up in both mastic beach/shirley area, I didn't see anything wrong with the area. My husband is also a graduate of William Floyd and he came out just fine. My husbands parents are still there, I don't think their area is bad at all. I wouldn't compare it to Brentwood though.

I know. I was surprised. My brother and I both graduated from Brentwood and I teach ESL in the Evening High School program in Brentwood and see what the kids there are like (I teach adults, but I see the kids who are taking night school at the same time)

When my brother said WF students made B'wood students look like angels, I was shocked!! I didn't think they got worse...

Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

As a Shirley resident, former employee of William Floyd schools, and the wife of a Floyd graduate, while the school district is not top-notch, it is for the most part middle class working people. I am not paying 15,000 a year in taxes, so i dont expect the caliber of a neighborhood that is. But my children will attend school there and I will not have reservations. I live in a nice neighborhood with friendly neighbors and children and I feel safe here.

Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

My FH graduated from Floyd too and the school is not that bad, but it is not the greatest. They are building a ton of beautiful brand new (reasonable) houses all over the district though. If we were looking to purchase a house right now I would not hesitate to look there.

Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

I actually live in Mastic Beach and send my son to the elementary school. I live in a very nice house and the community that I live in is nice as well. I don't think the bashing of the area is justified - it has changed a lot over the last few years - Besides EVERY area has a bad part of it. I used to live in Lake Grove - which is a 'nice' area - they had there bad areas too.

Re: Mastic Park - William Floyd School District

Every town has a bad area....When I lived in Lynbrook...If you didnt live in District 20 or District 24 it was considered a bad area....I am referring to the area where the kids would goto Lakeview / Malverne Schools. The area where the houses were, were really nice too.

I guess ti is the same with Mastic and Shirley...There are some good parts and their are some bad parts, and what ablut the areas that they are building all the new Victorian homes? Are those the good parts or the bad parts? Is the residentail area only good or is the town where the shopping center, and bank and other stores good too?
