Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
I can't tell you how many I've seen w/o basements - or they no garages & no basement (converted the garage to a family room)...how could you ask 1/2 million for it b/c you've 'updated' it.Some houses look so nice b/c they are totally redone and are asking the same amount of money for houses w/ no basement.
I don't know where I'd store all my crap if I didn't have a basement .... and forget about the clothes....
What's the matter w/ these old houses? People in those times didn't like ROOM? space? Closets? kitchens? basements? what were they thinking lol

Personally - no. In my opinion, a basement is invavluable when it comes to storage - and for future remodeling.

Re: Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
I wouldn't pay half a million dollars for anything smaller than a mansion.....I'm glad to not be buying a house in NY, it's ridiculous and soon all these homes will be in foreclosure because no one can keep up the payments and no one will be able to afford to buy them

Re: Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
I guess it depends on what you want and need. A basement was extremely important to my husband (and for most guys - for some reason men are obsessed with basements). We turned down several great houses because they didn't have one. The house we bought has a partial basement and honestly, we are already running out of storage room. So a basement, in my opinion, is important and definitely comes into play when you go to sell the house.

Re: Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
Our house didn't have a basement growing up so I don't miss it now. For awhile we only looked at houses with basements but then decided it had to at least have a basement OR a garage. So we got the garage but no basement. We have a HUGE stand up attic thats as big as the basement would be, and thats where all the crap goes.
Then there's the 3 extra bedrooms that we're not using (yet)...
So I guess my answer is Yes.

Re: Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
My parents house in Lynbrook was a 12 room house with no basement, but it had 6 bedrooms, and a full upstairs....Plus a Walk in Attic. The house itself probably needed about $150k worth of work and it sold for $499,999. It sold for asking price. The house had a 1 car garage which we used for storage, and the attic was a nice size which we also used for storage. The things I am looking for when looking at a house are a full finished or unfinished basement, garage, or at least a driveway and a shed in the yard....Nice size yard....House located on a quiet residental street, and a good school district.
If it doesnt have a basement, but it has some area that can be used for storage then I would consider it...but if it has nowhere for storage, I wouldnt consider it at all

Re: Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
Lots of houses in all price ranges (even in the millions) don't have basements - like anything else, it depends where you're looking. It's up to you to decide what factors are must-haves and nice-to-haves. For us personally, a finishable (or already finished) basement was on the must-have list, regardless of price range.

Re: Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
I did!!!! My house was well over $500K and has no basement. At first it did strike me as strange since DH and I both grew up with one. But we loved the house and it met our needs. Plus there is other storage. If it didn't have the garage and attic we would not have bought it. We have a 2 car garage (well one - because one of the garages is converted to a room we use for a gym right now) which we use for storage - not parking the car (we have a big driveway so no need for parking the car inside). We also have an attic which we haven't even touched. We have to put in floorboards and move the opening for easier access. So far the garage and closets met our storage needs. The only bad part is if we have to store furniture...but I figure I won't be doing that too often.Like previous poster said - it depends on neighborhood - we found in the area we were looking most houses didn't have basements and many houses in this area are over 500-even over a million dollars!!

Depends on where you are looking. If you are looking at houses by the water... none of them will probably have basements.

Re: Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
I would as long as there was an attic or a garage. Alot of house close to the water do not have basements and they are $$$$. To be honest with you I don't think a basement has a huge effect on the house price.

Re: Would you buy a 1/2 million dollar house with no basement?
My DH will not buy a house with out basement. I never understood why until he explained it to me in his line of work. My DH does remodeling and construction work. As he said to me 'A house with a basement is easier to fix if you have a leaky pipe or an electrical problem. If you have a problem in a house on a slab or a crawlspace most of the time the plumbers or builders will have to break apart your floor to find where the problem is coming from. This all cost more in the long run in fixing and in the amount of time it takes to solve in most cases a simple problem. '

We did, but it has a huge attic and garage... also its close to the water, so the water table is high...most houses dont have basements by us...
