Re: LIRR Train Lines
Lots of different lines make stops in Nassau Co. I'm on the Port Jeff line and we make several stops (on some trains). Port Jeff line overall isn't too bad.I've heard the Hempstead line is bad (lots of late trains, etc.)
The LIRR as a whole this winter $UCKED.

I always had luck with the Babylon line when I took the LIRR.

Re: LIRR Train Lines
I am on the Babylon line and commute from Bellmore - mostly on express trains. I leave pretty early but don't feel like in the morning I have many issues at all. The issues are more in the evening but not horrible. I mean I had a few awful days but being a subway commuter my whole life - I know how it goes....you have to expect delays here and there. A lot of people complain about LIRR but to tell you the truth - I don't think the service is as awful as people make it seem.I can't tell you what is the best line...the poster above says the Port Washington line is the best and it is for proximity to the city for the most part but I know a few people who commute on that line and are very often late to work and have delays and my line is usually fine on those same days. So it is all a matter of opinion.

Believe me it is a big change. I use to commute from Astoria and could also be in the city in 15 minutes...door to door from home to work in 25-30 minutes....now it is 1hour 15-30mins!! The worse part is being on the LIRR schedule - being a subway commuter I was so not use to that! Good Luck.

I commute from Northport now, it's an express train both ways and takes me about 1 hour and 20 mins each way.

The Oyster Bay line is generally known to be a 'bad' one, since it's one of the remaining lines requiring the diesel locomotive, and seems more apt than others to be late. For the distance you're going, it probably winds up taking a good bit longer than the other, quicker lines. You may have to even switch trains (in Hicksville? I forget where...) some of the time on the way to/from the city. It wouldn't stop me from living there - we had seriously considered a couple of houses out that way for a while - it's just something to be aware of.

I live just south of Oyster Bay and when I worked in the city, that would have been the station for me to commute from. But I learned quickly that no one does because it takes so long to get into Penn Station, and the amount of trains in is very limited. Most people travel south and take the tain from Syosset, like I did. Syosset is on the Huntington/Pt. Jeff line and is express to Penn and has much more trains.
The Oyster Bay-East Norwich area is beautiful, if I do say so myself, and the train station was definitely not a consideration when we moved up here, even though I commuted into the city back then (I am now a SAHM). Syosset was just as easy to commute from.

Re: LIRR Train Lines
The Port Washington line is definitely one of the best...especially if commute from Great neck, there are so many trains and the ride is very quick..all direct, lots of express, etc...

Re: LIRR Train Lines
The Port Washington line is the best, especially because it does not stop in Jamaica so you never have to transfer and delays are not as frequent. I use to live in Bayside and that was my line. Now we live in Garden City and I am on the Hempstead line which I think is terrible. Not so much because of delays, but more so because the commute to Penn station is 50 minutes and there are not that many trains. The Garden City stop is 7 stops after Jamaica. If I am running late in the morning or stay in the city later at night I have my DH take me or pick me up from Mineola. Lots more trains and quicker to and from Manhattan.

Re: LIRR Train Lines
I can only speak for the Huntington line. I've been commuting since 1/1/05 and there still hasn't been a single day that a single train has been on time. There is ALWAYS a problem - extra stops being made, equipment problems causing delays, etc.

The Long Beach line is pretty decent (we live in Lynbrook, and FH takes the train from Centre Ave.). Lynbrook is a good area to look, because the Babylon line runs through there too.Welcome New Vendors
