REpost from Pets....Am I CRAZY for wanting a 2nd dog?
Someone please help.....I am SO on the fence with this.I think it'd be great to have a 2nd dog...Bailey would have a buddy. We are looking at smaller dogs since Bailey is so big and technically, DH picked Bailey when we first started dating. I would get to pick the next one.
But I'm also terribly afraid it'll be so overwhelming! 2 dogs...food, vet bills, the 2 of them getting overly hyper and rambunctious.
I amd done with work May 17th and am off till mid August, so I'd be home all summer aside from us visiting NY sometime, but we'll be bringing the dogs with us.
Is it really that much more work to have a 2nd dog??

Re: REpost from Pets....Am I CRAZY for wanting a 2nd dog?
Shana - unfortunately I cannot give advice b/c we are dying for a second dog. We have a lab who is about a year and a half and he's good with the baby but he's very clingy and gets upset when the baby is getting the attention so we'd love to get him a buddy. However, the thought of more dog hair and trying to train him/her with an infant in the house is scaring me off. Also the fact that she isn't crawling or walking yet and I know its going to be hard with Cosmo much less adding another puppy into the mix.
I think you are in a great position to get another b/c by the time your little ones come along (baby dust, baby dust) Bailey and your other little pup will be trained.
Jeeez, did I even help you LOL!

I want a 2nd dog really badly too but I think you are TTCing again. Maybe wait and see after the baby is born how you are handling all of that new pressure and decide from there. Plus is your dog 'the baby'? Because I want another dog but I dotn want to make Murphy feel any less special, you know?

Re: REpost from Pets....Am I CRAZY for wanting a 2nd dog?
I have 2 dogs...one big and one small. The vet bills are more but not that much. Just the yearly shots and you can always take them to Petsmart or Petco and have them all done for $50.00. We adopted our first dog when she was older ...about 4 years old. We got the second dog as a puppy. It was the best decision. They are so very attached to each other, especially the little guy. It really isn't that much work at all and just a little more expensive but not so much so that it is a burden.

I don't think you are crazy at all. I want a second dog. We have a Blue American Pit Bull and I adore him but I want a French Bulldog. Everyone says I am crazy b/c we have a Pit and they think he will attack the new dog so it's a constant fight with my FH. The vet said he will be fine but to get a female not two males. I think it's good, b/c then they can hangout during the day together and stuff. I also like the idea of one big dog and one small dog. Pets can be an expense, but think about all the happiness they bring. I say go for it

Re: REpost from Pets....Am I CRAZY for wanting a 2nd dog?
YES!!!!!!!We have 2 dogs and it's insane. they hype each other up so much and they're wild. also one dog is bigger than the other, so we either have to keep thems eparate or really supervise them, or they could really hurt each other. I would NOT reccomend 2 dogs!
Also, some people have 2-3 dogs and no problems..but for me it's likeAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Re: REpost from Pets....Am I CRAZY for wanting a 2nd dog?
I have thought about what it might be like because we are TTC, but the good thing about adopting is that most of these dogs are already housetrained and some even get obedience training while in their foster home. Most are also around other dogs in foster care....in a year when a little one will be around (hopefully) the dog will be almost 2 years old!
I really want another dog....but I'm so scared. Bailey is so mellow now but still has her playfulness which I love and she makes us laugh so much!
I'll be home all summer and it's not like we go out at night on a regular basis....DH and I are homebodies....the only plans we have are for visiting NY and these weddings that are all out of town for weekends.

Re: REpost from Pets....Am I CRAZY for wanting a 2nd dog?
My parents have a Dachschund (she's actually mine, but our apartment doesn't allow pets so my parents are now her foster parents) named Schotzie and a Shepherd mix, named Mookie. They're so different in size, it's comical. Mookie was about 5 years old when I brought Schotzie (who was a puppy at the time) into the house and at first it awful. Mookie was so INSANELY jealous of her. At first we were afraid to even leave them in the same room alone together. (I learned after the fact that it's best to introduce them outside of the house so nobody gets territorial.) Eventually though after letting them hang out together while we watched them, they grew on eachother and now they're inseparable. They keep eachother entertained and happy, so even when they're home alone together, we know they're having fun. It is a little more work and it's a little more money, but I definately think it's worth it.

Kristin, that is exactly why I want a smaller dog....it would be SO comical to see Bailey play with someone half her size...and to see a small dog take her on! Bailey thinks she is a lap dog as it is now. Plus a smaller dog could keep up with Baileys' energy level when she plays.

It's kind of funny, because Schotzie (the Dachschund) grew up with no clue that she's a small dog. She thinks she's a big dog, because Mookie's a big dog. It's funny when she chases the cats and tries to act tough with Mookie. She definately keeps up Mookie's energy! They're always running around and play fighting. You would never know that Mookie's 7 years old, because Schotzie keeps her acting like a puppy.

I want a second dog too, but when me and FH moved in, the joining of my cat and his dog is still not going very well and its been almost a year. If they ever decide to get along we would get another dog.- Why don't you adopt an older dog that is already trained? There are so many good dogs out there at shelters that are housetrained and such .

The people who live across the street from me have a mastiff and a daschund. THey are so cute to watch. The little guy is about the size of the big one's head. They play together and the little one sometimes naps on the big one's back. They are outside all the time so I get to watch them. Those two doggies love each other but not everyone gets that lucky.Welcome New Vendors
