Spinoff..Pets eating human food

I have always been told that i shouldn't allow my dog to eat human food because it is bad for them.
Specifically chocolate, onions and garlic ..that it actually lessens the years they live!

Is this true? Or is it ok for animals to eat anything they want???
PLEASE enlighten me

Re: Spinoff..Pets eating human food

Certain things are toxic to dogs & cats including chocolate (especially bakers chocolate and dark chocolate), GRAPES, onions, garlic, and certain greens (some exotic kind that looks like flower).

Other things might make them sick depending on their stomach. We give our dog and cat only meat products in tiny quantities, like a bite or two maybe once a week. We don't feed them people food because we don't want them to beg or be annoying while we are eating. Plus we wanted to avoid the health problems associated with obesity.

Re: Spinoff..Pets eating human food

Garlic is fine for dogs, in fact garlic naturally fights fleas. Onions, chocolate, grapes, alcohol, pointsettas... those are the poisonous ones I can think of off hand.

Re: Spinoff..Pets eating human food

I didn't know grapes were bad! I almost fed one to Bama last night
He loves fruit - I give him cantaloupe, apples, pears....just tiny tastes of it though.

I also give him a little bit of low fat cottage cheese or yogurt.
Cheese, chicken, scrambled eggs...

Re: Spinoff..Pets eating human food

i ALWAYS give tehm Cheese and bacon. bacon is good for Lukins skin/coat. Makes it reallllly shine! I bet it would be good for Martin then too.
sometimes i cook them chicken breast. plain, no seasonings or anything.

Its mainly considered a big no no because it teaches them bad habits. Like begging at the table, picky eating habits with their own food and then their 'bathroom schedule' gets messed up if they are getting scraps. I always save the last bite for Murphy that way he knows that the meal is over.

Re: Spinoff..Pets eating human food

Pastina eats dog food and we give her baby carrots as treats.

And, if scraps fall on the ground while I'm cooking, she'll run over and scarf them up.

( I thought the other thread was about where the breed comes from, not what do they eat)

Re: Spinoff..Pets eating human food

FYI, most vets will tell you to give a dog boiled chicken and rice when the pooch as a very upset tummy.

My cats don't beg for much except dairy. One of my cats loves milk, cheese, eggs, ice cream, whipped cream, etc.

Re: Spinoff..Pets eating human food

Charlie has a stomach of iron...

A few years ago, he stole, yes stole, a full shank ham that was defrosting in the kitchen sink. He somehow managed to get ahold of the plastic bag that it's in (he has very short legs but a long back) and the little b@stard pulled it out of the sink, into the dining room and proceeded to eat most of it. When my mom got home, she freaked out cause he growled at her - then she yelled at me. lol

Then after that, he took a box of malted balls that was in the milk containter-type container and ripped that apart and ate every single one of them!!!

He's 12 years old now and never got sick from either episode - whew.
