Sand Ceremony or Unity Candle
Has everyone ever seen a sand ceremony performed at a wedding? We met with our officiant this past weekend and he told us that instead of a unity candle lighting he can do a sand ceremony. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's when the bride and the groom each has a bottle of colored sand and then they pour them together into a big bottle. I've never actually seen this done, so I want to get your opinions. FH thinks this might be a better idea than the candles because we'll be getting married outside and we won't have to worry about the flames going out. TIA!

Re: Sand Ceremony or Unity Candle
My girlfriend just got engaged and mentioned that to me. They are doing that and I think it sounds like a good idea. Its different. I like it, but have never seen it done.

I think it sounds really cool, and something that a lot of people probably haven't seen before!

Re: Sand Ceremony or Unity Candle
I actually really like the idea of the sand ceremony, but after seeing the Bachelorette Trista do it at her wedding.... she just made it seem a little cheesy. JMHO

We're going with the Unity Candle. I hear a lot about Sand Ceremony, but never really knew what it was all about. Thanks!

Oh, I didn't know Trista did it at her wedding. If we do it, it definitely won't be pink!

Re: Sand Ceremony or Unity Candle
I recently attended an outdoor wedding with the Sand Ceremony. IMO for an outdoor wedding it is better, the Unity candles sometimes do not stay lit outside. I live in Florida and the Sand Ceremony is big down here.

Re: Sand Ceremony or Unity Candle
I'm having the Unity Candle lighting ceremony. I've never heard of the Sand Ceremony, but sounds really nice. I think the Sand Ceremony would work best for an outdoors wedding. JMO!

that's exactly why we are doing the sand ceremony. I didn't want issues with the candles. I've never "seen" it done anywhere, but I like it anyway

I agree! I have never seen a candle ceremony done successfully with no issues lighting it or staying lit (and when it blows out immediately that is NOT good!). Concept is cute, execution usually not so much.

Re: Sand Ceremony or Unity Candle
Thanks, girls! Does anyone know where I can possibly get colored sand? Would Michael's or a store like that have it?

that's where I got mine. And the vases I'm using for the sand. :)
