How do you feel about listening to Ipods or walkmans at work?
This really bugs me. lately I've been seeing so many people at work with headphones on. When you're at work you're supposed to be alert and aware...not only of what's on your computer screen but also to those around you who may have questions or need your assistance!!

Re: How do you feel about listening to Ipods or walkmans at work?
i think it depends on the job, but don't think it is the most professional thing to do unless your job is data entry or housecleaning, jobs that don't always require the input of others.

Re: How do you feel about listening to Ipods or walkmans at work?
I listen to music through my ipod about 2 days a week. I checked with my boss and she is cool about it, which I care about more than my co workers. I usually wear them when I am working on a project and don't want to be disturbed anyway. I don't have an office to close a door so this is my method of not being disturbed. Although in my company we are a bunch of lazy mo fo's and rarely get up to talk to someone...why would you when we could just IM them? What I do find rude is the guy in the diagonal cube to my right who listens to gangsta rap all day and at a volumn where I couldn't hear my music anyway.

Re: How do you feel about listening to Ipods or walkmans at work?
I share an office with two other people. Plus, our office is the 'home away from home' for three other people. Sometimes there are several people in here and I can't concentrate when that's the case, so I put on my headphones, which are connected to my laptop. Also, I can't stand to hear people chewing food in an otherwise quiet office, so I wear them then too.
ETA: If I am alone in the office I just listen to music without the headphones.

i don't see anything wrong with it...As long as it doesn't interfere with your work performance

Re: How do you feel about listening to Ipods or walkmans at work?
I do it too on occasion when I need to concentrate and not be bothered by other people. I try to keep it low enough that I can still hear my phone ring and I can still hear if someone calls my name. I always make sure I make an announcement though that I'm putting them on just in case I don't respond right away. (There's only 3 of us so that works usually)

it doesn't bother me...a lot of people here do it but i am in a creative environment...so, many of the designers etc listen. And our phones flash when they ring so I guess its ok.

I agree. I keep my radio on, but only 1 other person can hear it back here. I turn it down when the phone rings or when soemoen coems by.
We hav e soemoent ha tlsitens to his headphoens after 5, and that is 5, but I always work after 5, & soemtiems I need to say things to him, even jsut like, ' ok, Jim, you're the last one here,so set the alarm', but he is oblivious.
Our cleaning lady at work does it too & that is fine, but sometiems I need to ask her a question , or tell her I will be out of her way in a second.

I'd get fired on the spot - I teach in a day treatment center.

Re: How do you feel about listening to Ipods or walkmans at work?
It depends on the job. I think it would be better to play music on the computer and not have ehadphones, but then that will disturb other people. I kind of wish i could wear my iPod to work, but people do ask for my help and I want to be available to them. When I was doing data entry, I would have done it, because I didn't talk to anyone anyway. But ai feel like headphones are kind of anti social, so I'd think it was iffy. I would probbaly never wear headphones unless I was alone..and if I were alone I still wouldnlt wear them because I'd need to be THAT much more aware of my surroundings

yes, that's definitely rude. Even thought your customers are not at work at the time it makes your job more difficult.
I listen to mine when I come in to work & I usually stop in the Deli on the way in, but I turn it off, so I can talk to the woman that works in the store.

Re: How do you feel about listening to Ipods or walkmans at work?
I work in an open cubicle and listen to the radio on my computer. Everyone else here has an office so they are completely unaware of cubicle etiqutte. For example, they'll stand at the end of my wall and have a 20 minute conversation about their weekends. If I didn't listen to music, I'd go crazy! For those of you who feel it's unprofessional, can you tell me why? I never thought of it that way and am curious of why you think so. I don't fell it affects my work and it even keeps me from being more distracted.

Re: How do you feel about listening to Ipods or walkmans at work?
I think it totally depends on the type of work you do and the level of phone interaction you have. If clients are in the office regularly then I don't think it's appropriate. At my last job, I did a lot of coding/web design and the music helped me drown out the noise in the office. It was low enough that I could hear the phone ring. I also wore the ear plug headphones so it wasn't so obvious. Most of the time I'd only put one of the pieces in my ear.
