Shawls for bridemaids - fashion/fabric district in NYC

So all I have is a colorswatch of my bridesmaids dresses. The dresses are a bit lowcut, so I want to have shawls made for my girls who are a little more on the modest side. I am thinking of going to the fabric district in NYC - has anyone had any experiences with doing this - do you know of a shop that is better than others, or do you know of a particular seamstress I could use once I choose the fabric that matches the dresses the best?

I am also open to any other options - websites, etc. to get shawls.

Thanks for your help everyone :)

I might be easier to match if you just order the extra material from the designer and have the shawls made from that--mine was $30 a yard & the shawls were $45 from the designer. Just a thought!

Yeah, unfortunately the designer is BCBG and since the dresses I chose for my BM's aren't considered 'part of their bridesmaids line' nothing can be ordered- they claim they have no extra material left. Such a pain.

You should contact Phyllis at gownfind.com. I know she has made shawls for other ladies on this site and they loved them!

I don't know of a specific shop, but like any 'district' in Manhattan, I usually just take a full afternoon to walk around, get price quotes, feel out a few different shops and salespeople (maybe even pit them against each other - fun!) and then go with your gut.

Have fun!
