Is anyone else REALLY bad with money/banking???

DH and I had a money talk last night and today I'm supposed to be researching savings accounts and mortgages to get the best rates and my head is just spinning. I seriously just don't get banking. I look at it all and it just doesn't make sense to me. I don't think I feel that way about ANYTHING ELSE but banking! I want to be involved, but it's making me so depressed!!!

Join the club! But I have to be in charge of finances otherwise Mr Boots would invest all of our money in Metallica paraphenalia or penny whistles and moon-pies!

It blows, but I'm learning!

Re: Is anyone else REALLY bad with money/banking???

DH is a treasury analyst so I am really the clueless one when it comes to finances and while I am good with saving and I have less debt than DH, I am lost about investing and stuff.

No, actually, it's not that he's lazy. He has no problems with doing it and he takes care of most bill paying. I was just complaining that we still haven't set up a joint savings account more than 14 months after we got married, and I feel like I'm in the dark with everything. Plus, a 14 year old child can get a better bank account than an expat...I need to upgrade my account nwo that I've had it for a while in order to build credit so that we can get a mortgage based on both our salaries instead of just his.

It really has to do with us getting our own place.

Re: Is anyone else REALLY bad with money/banking???

Washington Mutual has good ways of putting money into a savings acct. my husband & I have our checking acct. linked up to the savings so every month they take $50 from the checking & put it into the savings acct. It's easier for us since it's a sure way of money going in there every month. I work for State Farm and they have awesome rates for CD rates, so once you save a good chunk of money you can maybe put it in a CD. I take care of the budgeting & bill paying. Online checking is the best thing ever. MY Dh was such a bad spender that at one point in our marriage I decided to split our accts. and it was just a mess. It was all about mine & yours. I felt so horrible But he's gotten a lot better since we're saving to buy a house. We have a goal in mind so that keeps us focused! Hope this helps a bit

Re: Is anyone else REALLY bad with money/banking???

I do all the banking - I don't think I am *good* at it but I am ontop of everey single red cent that goes in & out of our accounts.

I just wish I knew more about the right way to pay bills (each week, twice a month, once per month?), the right amount to pay (in full, bare minimum, leave a small balance?), and the right (and safe) way to invest our little nest egg (mutual funds, money market accounts, stocks?).

We contacted a Financial Advisor and then DH slacked off and we haven't met with him again. I feel like I need to go back to school to learn how to 'live' finacially secure. People go on vacations, buy houses, invest in real estate making much less than we do - yet we feel like we'll never get there. Hummmmm, I always have a pit in my stomach!

Re: Is anyone else REALLY bad with money/banking???

I am terrible with money and DH is an economist, so I am more than happy to have him be in charge of that stuff.

Funny thing is, I did all the research for our mortgage and homeowners insurance, etc. He hates making phone calls. At least I know a good rate when I hear one. But as for saving and spending and using credit cards? I check with him first if it's going to be more than $100. And I don't use credit cards anymore.
