Mommies who recently started feeding baby Rice Cereal in their formula
How do you guys prepare it? And how often do you give it to your baby? I'm getting ready to introduce cereal to Mikey but the instructions on the box are for thicker cereal to be spoon fed.

if you want to put it in the bottle....just dump 2 tablespoons in a 4-6 ounce bottle...i did this at night before he went to bed...but not for long after about a week I started to spoon feed him.

Re: Mommies who recently started feeding baby Rice Cereal in their formula
My docotr told me to never put the rice cereal in a bottle unless I was doing it for weight loss reasons or for the baby being a HUGE eater and needing a few hrs in between feeds at night. Otherwise, she said if all is fine and it;s time to introduce cereal, it's time to put it on a spoon and feed the baby the old fashoioned way. If you put it in the bottle it negates the whole process fo learning to eat from a spoon and moving on to the next stage of feeding. You may have difficulty giving the baby cereal off of a spoon in a few months when you try since he will be so accustomed to feeding easily through his bottle.

I agree with the above, if they are ready for rice cereal then they are ready for it on a spoon, cereal in a bottle is only for those two reasons pretty much, or maybe reflux also. Otherwise, just pour some dry cereal in a plastic bowl, pour in some breast milk or formula, and stir it up! At first you can make it very thin, almost liquid, but still give it on a spoon.

dr's have you put cereal in the bottle for other reasons other then weight loss. We went to see a very hard to get an appt and popular pediatric gastrologist and he had me put cereal in her bottle not for gaining/loosing weight but for reflux so she would spit up less. In fact, when she has a bottle and no solids I still put 1-2 teespoons in her bottles and she spits up a lot less or not at all b/c of the rice in her bottle

You're right! It is commonly used for babies with reflux because the rice cereal adds heaviness to the gastric muscle which is weaker in kids with reflux. So you actually are adding the rice cereal for weight issues, it helps make the belly heavier and allows the food to stay down, which then results in less vomiting which can cause weight loss.
