Re: calling all NYC Private school teachers!

I don't teach in NYC private schools but know a little about them cause I grew up in Manhattan. From what I understand, the salary is slightly better than it used to be and may be even higher with an advanced degree. My SIL is moving to the city this spring and she has been trying out for a lot of the elite schools and she has had a very rough time (she has certification plus masters). These schools can be very competive (comparative to Long Island school districts). Not trying to discourage you, just so you know. A lot of these schools expect you to put in lots of hours. I worked with someone who applied at one of these schools and the principal told her the typical teacher leaves at around 6, 6:30 at night (almost implying that they are expected to put in that amount of prep time). Not all of these schools are like this, though. By all means it would be great experience and a great teaching environment. Have you thought about maybe one of the NYC parochial schools? I taught at one and they are less competive. The salary is not as high though; still slighly lower than NYC public schools. The Sunday times is an excellent place to look; they always have openings for a wide variety of Manhattan schools.

i just figured because i came out from here with a masters and a ton of other classes, that the 'elite' schools would love me
ya know!!

thanks, though! i just don't want to move there and then make a ton less money with still the same bills and all

Oh I didn't mean to discourage you!!! I was just speaking about my SIL's experience. It has gotten way competive;its crazy!!!! She has been dealing with a headhunter and he was saying it is one of the most competive years he has seen. Someone with great experience like you would be high on their list, so that is a positive. I am looking to go back and it will be very difficult for me because even with experience, I am lacking certification and masters.
