Queens Job Fair Teachers...URRRRRRR

Hi ladies, I'm going to a Queens job fair tomorrow and I just wanted to ask what reading program do they use in Queens?

What other things stand out in your mind?

What should I expect at the jobfair? Thanks so much!

Was anyone hired at a job fair?

TIA!!!

Re: Public School Teachers-Queens

good luck! i've heard from peopl that they've been hired at job fairs on the spot.
as for queens reading...it is the teachers college balanced literacy program. it is a very frustrated program b/c it is scripted (which ca nbe good for some teachers) and imo, incredibly vague. it is not teacher friendly, so basically, i (and other teachers) find myself writing units and lesson plans and scrambling to make it good.
the idea behind it is that there is a reading/writing block everyday. you give a ten minute mini lesson that follows a connect/teach/engage/share layout. then they read, you conference and make sure they are on reading levels. writing is basically the same thing. the students hate it. test scores have gone down. i could go on. but the idea is that kids are exposed to reading and writing everyday.
good luck!

Re: Public School Teachers-Queens

Thanks so much for your help.

The balanced literacy info is a big help.

Generally do most of the schools show up? How is it laid out?

Anything I should/shouldn't do?

Thanks!!!!!!

Cindy

VEnting!!!!!!!

OMG, let me say I will NEVER ever again do a job fair. After doing over 3 hours of research last night & printing up 50 resumes/cover letters & cert copies, I go today to find out a total of 5, yes 5 elementary schools are there. THEN only 2 of the 5 are hiring 'regular elementary teachers' (the others: ESL, Science, Music) & NONE of the schools are in areas where I would 'choose' to work....I wait in line for over an hour to meet with this woman who asks if I realize where her school is (as she sees Lindenhurst on my resume). I tell her I'm quite familiar w/ Queens as I lived there my entire life. She then asks me to describe a math lesson to her (she glances at my resume & then says, OHHHHH Pre-K) & sort of rolls her eyes. I tell her I have 3 years at 2nd grade as well but by that point I lost her. I left feeling more than a little frustrated & then sat in 2 hours worth of traffic on the Cross Island/Southern State. URRRRRRRRR!!!!

Re: Queens Job Fair Teachers...URRRRRRR

OMG, that really *****, sorry you had to deal with that!

I was supposed to go, but I got of work late, and I was exhausted, and I just had the feeling that I didnt want to go. I was in the car telling FI that I didnt want to go and he was mad, but I just couldnt do it! I see it wouldnt have done me any good if I went anyway.

I cant believe only 5 schools were there! Why do they bother holding it?!?!?!?!?!

Re: Queens Job Fair Teachers...URRRRRRR

I'm sorry let me amend it to say there were 5 elementary schools, but also High Schools and Middle Schools and Special Ed districts there.

Then the deputy superintendant guy says if you are Elementary, ECE or SS there are a VERY limited number of positions available (in general in the NYC system). Then he was pushing this conversion thing to Math, Science, ESL & Bilingual and offering people jobs in that area.

Believe me you didn't miss out on much. There was also a TON of people there & lots of impatience.

It just seems by this point they would run it a bit more smooth.
