FMIL issue (strange)

A friend of mine who just got engaged was just asking me advice on this issue and i really didn't know what to tell her. See, about one month ago she got engaged. She was recently speaking with her FMIL and her FMIL told her that she went into a bridal shop in NYC and tried on wedding dresses. Yes, her FMIL went to try on wedding dresses. Does anyone else on here think that is werid. My friend thought so and so did I. I never heard of that before. The FMIL said she was doing it 'for fun'. I still thyink that is strange and I was curious to hear what you girls thought. BE HONEST!

Re: FMIL issue (strange)

I think its strange and if I were the FMIL I wouldnt have said anything, but maybe she's trying to get back some of those old feelings and memories from the days when she was engaged. I wouldnt make a big deal out of it.

I agree and think that is weird. I probably wouldn't say anything to her, but its strange none the less.

Re: FMIL issue (strange)

I do think it's weird, but maybe she's just really excited about her son getting married. If your friend is close with her FMIL maybe she can invite her along when she's ready to go gown shopping.
Not only will it include her FMIL, but it will make it very clear who the bride is.

Re: FMIL issue (strange)

Okay, I totally would've kept that to myself, maybe even trying them on under an assumed name!

Re: FMIL issue (strange)

Yea, that is quite odd!! She prob just misses when she was a young bride and she may have been reminiscing back to her wedding day. Is she divorced and seeing someone new? She could possibly be thinking that she wants to get remarried. As long as this behavior is out of her system now I don't think your friend has anything to worry about. However, if she continues to do these strange things then there's def a problem and it needs to get nipped in the bud asap!

Re: FMIL issue (strange)

ok - when I was looking for dresses for myself, I tried on dresses for my bridesmaids, my mom, my grandma and my fmil. I would go to the stores with them and they would ask me do this. They wanted to see how the dress looked on. Not on me specifically, but on a person. I am not sure if I would be too happy with FMIL for actually trying bridal gowns on, but I would appreciate the fact that she took the time to look at something for me - just as long as she understood that I would make up my own mind about my dress as I would expect her to make the final decision about what she wore.

Re: FMIL issue (strange)

Yep - I agree, that was strange, and your friend should be careful, because it may be indicative of a FMIL who is going to run the day with thoughts of how it 'should be' based on what she would do. I think your friend should nicely, kindly, talk about her own ideas and soon, so as to make very clear who the bride is here. I just don't understand people sometimes . . .

Re: FMIL issue (strange)

You girls are the best. Thanks for all of your feedback. I agree with just about everyone on here. I think it is so strange. I really didn't know what to say to her when she told me the story. I never heard that one before. I really tried to give her FMIL the benefit of the doubt but i can't get past the fact that it it so WERID. My friend has a pretty good relationship with her MIL but still was so taken back by the whole thing. Her FMIL was even saying things like she couldn't tell what the dresses looked like on her b/c her hair was a mess. The story gets stranager and stranger. BTW, it didn't sound like she was trying on dresses for the bride, but instead she said it was for fun for her. I'm sorry, but i think it is strange. and i guess most of you agree with me. I guess it's a good laugh though.
