Money Question (handling finances post wedding)

I'm not sure - but if I bring anything to the marriage BEFORE we get married (i.e. money my parents have saved for me) does this money get co-mingled, or does it remain in my name???

Re: Money Question (handling finances post wedding)

That is up to you.

You can keep it in your own name, or put everything in a joint account.

Re: Money Question (handling finances post wedding)

however, once you comingle this property, it becomes joint property and subject to equitable distribution if you ever divorce.

ETA: even if your FH has access to this account, a court may still deem it joint property.

Re: Money Question (handling finances post wedding)

thank you so much for your answers.....i'm thinking of using any of my savings towards our future kid's education. it can be under my name, and then if we ever divorce g-d forbid, of course the money will be split equitably b/c it's for our kids! problem solved.....thoughts?

Re: Money Question (handling finances post wedding)

Have you had this conversation with your FH?

Please, please, please so many couples fall in love and can't discuss the unromantic, yet very practical, aspects of life, like money, living wills, etc.

You need to have this conversation with HIM ASAP.

If you need help pick up the book '100 Essential Questions to Ask Before you get married'. It's excellent. FH and I completed it before we got engaged.

Re: Money Question (handling finances post wedding)

I have to agree with discussing it with FH. Many people have different thoughts on money and that can be a serious problem. FH and I discussed it all and when we moved in together we just put it all together and have one bank account. But I know alot of people who do it seperate as well. Either way you need to have a plan that you both agree to!

Re: Money Question (handling finances post wedding)

FH & I discussed this (not that either of us have all that much) & we decided to combine everything. It's easier for us & makes the most sense but you have to do whatever makes you two comfortable as a couple.
