Re: can I ask a stupid question
a grooms cake is a smaller cake put next to the wedding cake in a different flavor. Personally I find them a waste of money. Its an old tradition.

Re: can I ask a stupid question
I don't know what the purpose is, but I think they have at either the bachelor party or the rehearsal dinner. I could be wrong, but it would be great if someone could let us know.

ok so I asked the same question on theBHB and this is the response I got
From

It is a cake that is a male related theme- something that is characteristic of the groom. It is served as the dessert at the rehearsal dinner

Re: can I ask a stupid question
Just saw this online…It is a cake for the groom that can be decorated or shaped into something that reflects one of his hobbies, or something the couple enjoys doing together.
Tradition (LONG, LONG time ago):
The groom's was cut into small pieces and wrapped or boxed separately for the guests to take as souvenirs. It was believed that a woman slipping a piece of this cake under her pillow, would dream of her future husband and what he would look like.

Re: can I ask a stupid question
I am going to do the grooms cake... I feel bad that too often all these details are about what WE want.. so I'm definitely having a cake that is all about him at the rehearsal dinner. We'd have a cake either way, so it's not any extra money out of my pocket

Re: can I ask a stupid question
I thought this was more of a Southern tradition. I've only seen it at a few weddings in the South....but usually the bride keeps the cake a secret from the groom.

Re: can I ask a stupid question
Its a Southern thing but it seems that a lot of people are doing it these days...Don't know the point but its made into the shape of something the groom would like and is used for the rehearsal dinner or at the reception

Re: can I ask a stupid question
Yes, definitely a Southern thing. When my best friend in Tx got married, her FI had a football groom's cake in chocolate. I haven't ever seen one up here.

Re: can I ask a stupid question
I think I'm going to surprise my FH with a cake in the shape of a baseball, and maybe with a mets theme, for the rehearsal dinner. I'm still debating though b/c FH doesn't eat cake so I don't know if it will be a waste.Welcome New Vendors
