Anyone know what high levels of creatinine in blood signify?

My DH has been really lethargic and tired, so the Dr. sent him in for bloodwork. Yesterday the Dr. called and said his creatinine levels in his blood are too high, and they are going to do more tests. I have been looking on the web, and all I can find is that creatinine levels may be a sign of kidney problems or failure. Has anyone heard of it, or had the same issues? Of course DH spoke to the Dr. and didn't ask many follow up questions.

No, but this website pretty much says it doesn't mean anything by itself. He'll need follow up tests.

Creatinine

I hope your DH is okay!

Thanks! From researching I think he may have rhabdomyolysis, which doesn't sound too serious...But a very impressive sounding word! I think I will ask the doctor about rhabdomyolysis...But doctors do hate when I self diagnose (but since this is for DH it isn't really self diagnosis!).

Re: Anyone know what high levels of creatinine in blood signify?

My mom had high levels of creatinine with an autoimmune disorder she had. She also had high levels of something called BUN - I can't remember what it stands for...urea something.

Anyway, they did a whole battery of tests to discover the source of the high levels - your doctor will probably want to look at the level in your urine to make sure it is being cleared by your kidneys.

Basically, there's nothing a simple blood test can really tell you about why your levels are high.

I want to say DH had some issues with his creatine levels recently when he was on Crestor to lower his cholerestal. Not positive, but I think that was effected. The Dr. took him off the Crestor.

Thanks, good to know! DH had actually been drinking some protein shakes after working out (he works out a lot), and the doctor told him to stop taking them because people often have side effects. I never knew that.

A lot of those shakes contain creatine... I am not sure what effect they play on the body...

Oh, that might be it. My friend used to take creatine as a supplement, so it might be found in protein shakes as well.

That was my first thought, but I don't think creatine and the levels of creatinine are related (though they do sound the same!).

Oh, sorry. I thought I read creatine. I'm not sure what creatinine is. Keep us updated. Hope your DH is alright.
