i was told we were not allowed to do that- that the bank wont give you more money than your house is worth

Most banks will lend you money up to a certain percentage of the value of the home. If you house appraises for more money than you are paying you can usualy take out a home equity loan to pay for repairs and stuff.

Also if you put money down, you usually can pull that equity out immediatley.
