two weeks before the wedding, and my dad is in the hospital.....

We were in south florida for the weekend (we live in Orlando) for my bridal shower on saturday- my dad was complaining of heartburn all weekend. He kept blaming it on some "bad" sausage he ate (his excuse for not going to the doctor). Well, he just had angioplasty done because he had a minor heart attack. The doctor said that a bypass is not far along down the road- so, what, he just sits around and waits for another heart attack until they do it? I guess they will be monitoring him. But, now I am worried about him making the trip up to NY for the wedding


I am going to visit him now- Maybe now he will stop smoking! Does anyone else have heart disease in their family?

Your Dad will make it to NY, no problem. He wouldn't miss it for the world! As weird as it sounds, sometimes the mind really does heal the body.

I do.

My grandpa and uncle died of sudden heart attacks.

My Dad had a heart attack and so did my Mom. It runs all over my family on both sides

But, on the brighter side its amazing what doctors can do these days. Your Dad may not even need a bypass, they may be able to put a stent in, my Dad has 3 of them. Its much less major surgery than a bypass and a much shorter recovery time.

My Mom had bypass a long time ago. It was a very long recovery and the doctors had to go back in and redue it!!!!

But I can tell you that now my parents (knock on wood) are very active people and have gone back to their normal activities completely.

I hope your Dad is ok.

Heart disease runs in my family as well. If he just had the angioplasty, he should be fine for the wedding.

You really hit home because my dad alsohas had three stents put in, this time they just put in one more-
thank you all so much for responding- all of you- because you have helped me feel that this isn't the end of the world and that things could get better from here. I just wish he would stop smoking- but all my sisters still smoke in the house, so it is hard for him to quit.

thank you all again for your kind words. I guess sometimes we need curveballs like this- especially during wedding planning- to put life back into perspective. It's not all about the flowers and favors, and we need to cherish those close to us.

A friend of mine had an angio, and was up and about in a surprisingly short time.

Your Dad is in my prayers and I am sure he will be ok. My Dad had triple bypass surgery a year before my wedding. There is heart disease on both sides of the family. My Dad is doing much better now but I know how you feel. I know your wedding day is fast approaching but like some other girls mentioned it is amazing what they can do these days. He is going to be there to walk you down that aisle. Stay strong and know we are all here for you.

FH's dad has bad herat problems..

He actually had quadruple bypass the DAY that FH was supposed to leave for iraq....thank God his deployment was postponed a week and he is fine.

I will keep your dad in my prayers. Let meknow if you have any qeustions

unfortunately yes - my Dad passed away a year ago this month from a major heart attack. He also smoked and was such a pain about the doctor thing sometimes. His 3 brothers have heart problems also and so did my Grandpa. My one Uncle had a triple bypass and is still with us. Guys are so darn stubborn. Take care of him and make sure that he rests and GOES TO THE DR!!! Everything will be fine....

Well, I visited him yesterday after the procedure and he looked much better and in good spirits- I even helped him eat his first meal in two days- he couldn't sit up for another couple of hours so he had to eat laying flat down- it was funny!
He said the doctor said that the last stent they put in covered his last artery left- the others already have stents in them- so now he should be fine. He is also going to be monitored of course.

The best part is EVERYONE said they will stop smoking now! But, I will believe it when I see it because we lost my stepmom almost eight years ago to cancer, and everyone said they were quitting then- but it didn't last. Hopefully this will be the final wake up call! My dad did make a joke about it and said "Well, I haven't smoked for two days- aren't you proud of me?" he thinks he is funny! But, with them driving up to NY, I think it will be VERY hard for them, hopefully they have enough will power~! But as soon as we get to NY we will be surrounded with my dad's family so they will be watching his every move, I am sure! Especially grandma!

First off, I am sorry to hear about your dad. But as long as he is getting help, that is all that matters right now (and stopping smoking)

My father had to have a bipass at the age of 41. He had suffered from a silent heart attack. The only reason that we found this was because he was going in for back surgery and all the pre ops kept on coming back bad. His surgery was rescheduled 3 times because they didnt know what was wrong with him. On the day before the 3rd surgery, they were just going to okay him. My mom was not okay with this, so we went to another cardiologist. This cardiologist gave my dad a stress test and discovered the heart attack. If my father had gone in for the back surgery, they said that he would have died on the table. This doctor is a god send.

My father had his bypass at Columbia Hospital. Dr Oz(he's been on Oprah a few times) performed the surgery. It was all robotic. My father was either the first, or one of the firsts to have this done. He is absolutely fine now. He was also a smoker, but this scared the life out of him and he quit.
