Re: got a new kitty anyone have suggestions on intro with older cat

Try doing it gradually. try keeping the kitten in a seperate room for a few days.Put his smellon a blanket or toy let the older cat smell it and get used to the kitten's smell.
THis should help.

Just remember it is stressful for the older cat to have a new member of the family. Let them get acquainted gradually.

Another thing you can do is try calling Warren Eckstein. He is a terrific pet therapist. Here is the info:

Re: got a new kitty anyone have suggestions on intro with older cat

We got a new kitten in November.
This is how we introduced them:
When we brought the kitten home, we immediately put her in the bathroom...with a litter box, a food dish and a towel to sleep on.
Gunnar (old cat) did not see her at all so he knew nothing was going on.
Once the kitten got used to us (after about 2 weeks), we would take her out and hold her for Gunnar to see and for her to see Gunnar....just for a few moments.
At that point, Gunnar started to realize something was going on (he's so dumb ).
After about 3-3 1/2 weeks, we would let the kitten out of the bathroom when we were home and able to watch the two of them interact. The first few times, there was hissing and swatting....but not that much at all. I was really impressed with Gunnar's acceptance of her, because he normally hates any other living being .
When we wern't home, the kitten stayed in the bathroom.
After a few days of that, we decided to let her stay out for an entire night and nothing happened, so she's been out of the bathroom ever since.
I think it helped that we slowly got them used to each other...and I think it also helped that Gunnar was so much bigger than her, so he was still able to feel powerful and in control of the situation.

Now, 8 months later, you'd think these two cats have lived their whole lives together - they sleep and play with each other and even bathe one abother (as much as I hate watching it)

Good Luck!
Congratulations on the new kitten!!
