I should say no more than a year. Take your time and go to some odd places which have white dresses (not wedding gowns) and see what you like. Most places can have you gown to you in 4-6 months. (Or less).

Re: How far in advance should I start to look for my gown??
Yeah start as soon as possible. Wedding gowns take a few months to a year to order -- it depend on the designer. My Eve of Milady took about 8 months to come in. Plus you want some time just in case of errors, late delivery and fittings.
Oh another little thing is to, if you want, lie about your wedding date (but just remember it
) becasue I wanted to make sure I had enough time in case of an error. I told them my wedding was in April it was really in May.

That's a good time. You want to start at LEAST 8 - 9 months in advance.A little over a year is good, especially if you are picky and want to take your time - which you should!

Sorry I just saw your posts.
My fitting appointments weren't too early I think I had one Feb and two in March and then I picked it up that Thursday before my 'fake' date. My fake date was 4 Saturdays before my real wedding and then I just hung my dress in my house until my wedding.
