Any tips on how to stay awake in class?

I have a habit of falling asleep in class. Luckily my college classes were so large usually no one noticed. But soon I am starting another grad. program, and classes meet all day, 8AM-6PM. Any ideas on how to stay awake? I already bought gum and peppermints...

Cold water used to help me.

Oooh, and avoid eating any dairy products before class, too.

Re: Any tips on how to stay awake in class?

Pinch yourself on your ear
Write out the words to your favorite song in your notebook
Write letters to people

I mean, those aren't going to help you learn....but it's better than the humiliation of falling asleep in class!

The good news is that I will have a laptop with internet access so hopefully I can sneak some LIW time to stay awake! But that doesn't work for me at work....

Re: Any tips on how to stay awake in class?

when I am about to fall asleep in meetings I pinch the inside of my thigh really hard

I took defensive driving a few years back and it was so boring I actually compiled a list of all the people Ive kissed (or I tried to remember). Gotta keep the brain moving to stay awake!

Re: Any tips on how to stay awake in class?

I used to take a few minutes to go outside the classroom and walk around for a little bit. I did this maybe every hour and a half...

It can happen even if you want to stay awake.
Sometimes it is just the way the teacher presents, or the time of day...etc. It used to happen to me all the time even in classes I liked. Sometimes you are just so physically exhausted from your day that your body shuts off.

What's even worse is that is happens to me in work meetings, even small ones with ten people. I am anemic, and sometimes that causes it, but even when I am very careful with my medicine I can just randomly fall asleep.

Re: Any tips on how to stay awake in class?

I acutally just found out that if you slouch in your seat it cuts off some much needed oxygen since you are breathing more shallow and can cause you to be sleepy.

If you sit up straight, shoulders back, you are getting the most oxygen possible since your diaphram can expand to it's fullest and will help you stay awake.

I thought this was VERY interesting. They taught us this here at work since we sit in so many meetings & conference calls.

I know. I was just teasing. Besides, I also didn't realize the classes were ALL DAY.

I totally used to do those! In the margins of all my class notes there were song lyrics and little notes to my friends!

Re: Any tips on how to stay awake in class?

WATER WATER WATER!!!

It actually feeds oxygen into your system...

I used to work the graveyard shift and cold water kept me alive! Avoid caffeine and suger during the day too, they will have you crashing at all different times!

Good Luck!

I used to make lists of everything I had to do at home, grocery shopping lists,
write letters to friends or even DH.

Re: Any tips on how to stay awake in class?

I used to fall asleep in class all the time. Then I read if you doodle you can 1. stay awake and 2 actually retain more info.
I dont know where the idea came from...but it did seem to work for me.
