5 Month Old Feeding Question

My DS just turned 5 months and I am beginning to introduce 'real' food to him. So far he haon't know ho had rice cereal and green beans (not at the same time). He loves eating and can not get enough.

I just don't know how much to feed him or how often.

He also gets about 24 to 30 ounces of formula a day.

Thanks

Re: 5 Month Old Feeding Question

you could feed him 1x or 3 meals a day depending on what you want to give him. It sounds like hes getting most of his nutrition from formula still so its really up to you

Re: 5 Month Old Feeding Question

When Cassidy was that age, she had about 28 oz of formula a day, 3 tablespoons of cereal 2x a day (breakfast and dinner) 1/2 jar of fruit with breakfast and 1/2 jar veggies with dinner.

Re: 5 Month Old Feeding Question

Kev is five months. I started food early (3.5 months) because he is a hungry boy and needed more than formula. So I am pretty far along.

He started with 1 tablespoons of cereal (twice a day) and I gradually increased it and made it thicker as I saw he could handle it. I tried each cereal for 7 days and when I finished the cereals I moved to fruits then veggies. (you can do for less than a week but I liked to go 7 days.) I would do about 2 tablespoons of cereal (plus formula) and then a half a jar of fruit/veggie - twice a day (dinner and breakfast). Little by little I increased the cereal and now he is up to about 3 tablespoons or a little more. He drinks about 28oz of formula a day (he was doing 32 until I introcuded fruits and vegiies and upped cereal). One of my drs - said the rule should be if eating more than 32 oz of formula - increase solids. If under 24 oz of formula - decrease solids.

I just had his 5 month apptmt (he is about 5.5 months) and dr cleared us for meats, pastina and ashed potatoes. I may start at about 6 months - no use rushing it. He will do cereal and 1/2 to a whole jar fruit in the morning. A meat mixture for lunch. Dinner cereal and veggie. She said he may move to 4 bottles instead of 5 and that's ok.

Re: 5 Month Old Feeding Question

my little on just started cereal on Sat. (5 months 2 weeks)

Dr. said to do 2-4 days of rice, then 2-4 days of oatmeal then 2-4 days of rice, oatmeal, and barley.
He said to do each 2x a day (a tablespoon of cereal with 3 tbsp of bm)

after that, continue the cereal of choice and add in the veggies one at a time, alt. colors...

he is still getting bm the same number of times, just I suppliment 2 feedings a day with the cereal.

hope that helps ?!
