Nursing Homes in Suffolk?
Anyone have any reccomendations for nursing homes in the Huntington area? My grandfather had a stroke yesterday and it looks like he'll be needed 24 hour care and we want to find something nice for him.
He's not old/fragile, in fact he's pretty active and healthy otherwise, so a nice facility/home would be better than a sterile-hospital type setting. We're still waiting for the final prognosis but I need to know where to start looking. If anyone has any experience with a good facility, please let me know.

It is not in huntington but right off of exit 63 on the LIE. Island Rehab. I have known quite of few people in there and they really take excelelnt care of their patients.

Re: Nursing Homes in Suffolk?
Would he be well enough to live in an assisted living facility? All the nursing homes are going to have that 'hospital' feel. My grandmother was lived in Senior Quarters (now called Atria) in East Northport for about 5 years, and it was very nice, like a hotel. They have 24-hour nurses there, but they are not there to always provide asisstance to the residence. If your grandpa needs help with eating, going to the bathroom, etc, then he will need a nurding home. If you are just concerned about him living at home alone, then assisted living would be great for him.
When my grandma got really sick, she went to gurwin. It has that hospital feeling, as do all nursing homes.

You may want to find out which places Medicare will pay for unless it will be 100% paid for not through Medicare.

It is not too from from Huntington, but I can recommend St. Johnland in Kings Park. They just refurnished it and it is really beautiful. My MIL is there and has been for almost 2 years My FIL was there also and to say the least he was very difficult. Also the NYC firefighter that jumped from the burning building was there not too long ago. The staff is very compassionate and accommodating, and the place is beautiful.

My friend's grandfather has been at Carillon for years now. It's at the corner of Pulaski and Park Avenue.

that's one facility we are looking into right now. We need to give the hospital/social worker some places by Tuesday so we'll see.
He looked really good today. He's confused but in a 'jolly' mood which is a nice change from his ripping out his IV's. We have to wait a few more days for some more tests before we can make any definitive decisions on his care. I would love to see him in assisted living if at all possible. Just not sure if it's possible.
