I haven't looked into it yet but I am definitely using my dress to make a christening dress probably early next year.

I am having my dress made in a bassinet for our children we have down the road and also for their christening gowns.

I could never cut into my dress but my mom did this with her dress and has offered to do it for me. I am very lucky to have her.

Im not planning on doing anything with it anytime soon but years from now, I think I might make an outfit to wear on an anniversary with the material. Maybe a cute skirt or something.

Or if we have children, I might use it for a baby blanket, etc..

Its hard for me to imagine ripping it to pieces.

For now, I don't have any intentions for my dress, other than the hope that I have a girl and that she would even consider wearing it on her special day. But I'm still several years away from having kids, so I will see when or if that day ever happens.

Re: How many of you are planning on taking the material of your dress to make something new?

I could never take my dress apart, I love it so much. I know it's not very realistic, but I hold out hope that someday, someone in my family will wear my wedding dress. I'm already working on my 16-year-old niece. If that doesn't work, I have a seven-year-old niece. Then there's always the possibility I'll have a daughter...

Re: How many of you are planning on taking the material of your dress to make something new?

I couldn't cut into my wedding dress either.

I would like to show my children my dress one day - even though i don't expect my Daughter (if I have one) to wear it on her wedding day unless she chooses too.

I personally don't find the symbolic reasoning of turning a wedding dress into a christening gown or bassinet.....I think it would be cheaper to just buy a pretty christening gown/bassinet in the store than having my dress altered and cut up into one.

But thats JMO.

Re: How many of you are planning on taking the material of your dress to make something new?

I just want to say that i dont see why everyone thinks its so crazy that our daughters might want to wear our gowns.

Its not if I would expect her to wear it exactly as is - I wouldnt mind her doing whatever she wanted to update it. My gown is made of very expensive silk - even if she totally changes the style, the material is worth reusing not to mention the symbolism.

I know that if my parents were happily married and I could have used my mothers gown and updated as I wanted, I would have totally used it.

I love when I hear about a daughter wearing her mothers gown...i think its so touching.

I don't think I could ever cut my dress! I think I will always be hopeful that someone else will wear it one day, even though I could make the christening outfit if I wanted to! I wonder how much people charge for that? Maybe I could start a side business! ha.

Glad to hear this Steph! My dress is made of very expensive fabric as well and I too would have no problem with my daughter/niece altering the dress to be whatever she wanted it to be. I just feel like with how much styles change and different body types and wanting the experience of shopping for your own gown, the odds are stacked against it. Though, I think my dress is a very classic, timeless style.

Re: How many of you are planning on taking the material of your dress to make something new?

I had a shawl so I am going to make it into 2 pillows for my baby and my sisters baby when we both have kids. We decided we would make this a family heirloom to take pics of the baby with it . When the time comes i will make it into that. I do not know what I will do with whatever leftover material from the shawl yet, that I have after I make the pillows.
