Update: Changed my name at SS! And DMV- pleasant surprise!

I was surprised that it was so easy and only an hour wait. They even had comfy chairs.

Plus they let me change my name the way I wanted no problem.

I was so happy since I heard that if you already have a middle name on you SS card, they tell you go to court to change it. Now lets see about DMV tomorrow

DMV was great- you can make appointments here in California so it saves a lot of time. I was in and out in under an hour. I did my title and registration and finally cleared my title of the lienholder which I was supposed to do years ago! Then I changed my license and she let me change my middle name to my maiden name no prob! I was so excited since I heard DMV doesn't do that. I think its different here in CA. But it was tons more expensive- 20 to change my license and 15 to change registration and title.

Then I got the thrill of changing EVERYTHING at work and credit union- all in all- 22 forms

Now all that's left is the credit cards, mortgage, home title and passport-and open a new checking account at my husband's bank. This was way easier than I thought it would be.

I am so excited DMV let me change my middle name. I have no idea why they don't let you do this in NY.

Because marrriage laws are state mandated (remember the whole gay marriage thing in San Fran and New Paltz but other places had more definitive language?) they have different laws for name changing.

My BF lives in Mass. and she was able to just do what you did. In NY you have to change your name to your husband's last and then go to court and pay (about a $200 fee) to then drop your middle name and add your maiden name as your middle name.

All states are different.

Then again, in some states that allow you to marry your cousin I guess the name change thing is not an issue Sorry, I couldn't resist.

It was was really easy. I changed my name on August 8th and I recieved my new SS card monday.

i did the same today (ss office) 2 1/2 hours and they wouldn't let me use my maiden name as my middle name. now i have to go to the court house!

I am so sorry... I don't see how that should be different from person to person at SS office. But trust me, its worth the pain. Having my name the way I wanted it means everything to me.

Congratulations! You are further along than I am--I have only gone to SS so far. My HR department is an hour trip from where I work, and I can't seem to get up there anytime soon.

Haven't tried the DMV yet either. That's a wonderful idea to have appts.! It would save so much time.

After HR, then I'll change my bank, metrochek, credit cards, etc.

Glad you got to keep your last name also.

You will get it done! SS is so much more important than any of them. The only reason I got so much done is I am off from work. Otherwise it would have taken me months!

People in LA are very lazy- appointments for DMV and SS, chairs in both offices so you don't have to wait in line, its so funny how spoiled people are out here!

I just changed my name too this week. I was able to use my maiden name as my middle name and had no problems at SS or DMV, but I live in VA. Now just have to change the creditcards, bank, insurance, passport, etc....
