need car recommendations

I am starting a new job in Westchester, about a 30 minute drive away from my house. DH and are talking about getting a second car- something used. DH will only buy American cars. I need something that's safe and small- I'm really not picky but I don't know anything about cars or the car buying process. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice? Thanks

Chevrolet Prizm. It is an american car that is made by Toyota. I have a 2001 that I bought in 2003 for $9300 with 19k miles, and It now has 51k miles and i have not had one problem with it. Just change the oil and go. It runs excellent, it is built well and it is excellent on gas.
