What is the function of bridesmaids?

Not a sarcastic comment, but a sincere question.

I am not planning on having any because I don't see the need for them, but everyone is telling me 'You have to have bridesmaids' Um, why?

You'll see, when you are freaking out in the end and you need someone to help you out... they are there for you. They help take on duties that you would normally do if you didn't have them.

great question, because mine have done nothing so far except make my life difficult and cost me $, but I guess the point is to have the people you love to 'stand by you' on the big day.

As far as their 'duties' bridesmaids typically plan your shower and bachelorette party. To me, having bridesmaids is a way to honor special women in my life. My BMs are either close family members or girls I have been good friends with for at least 10 years. Do I necessarily need bridesmaids? No, but I'm glad to have them stand right beside me on one of the most important days of my life.

I think all you really need is a MOH. she signes the papers and stuff. And, she will help you with everything. The person I talk to about every single thing is my MOH, my sister. The other bridesmaids I just talk to about the wedding and stuff, but not problems that I'm having.

Mine have also made me feel bad about the fact that they have to spend so much money to be in the bridal party.

I was clueless as well since this was the first wedding I was a part of as an adult...this helped a lot!

Thanks for the link. This is the first wedding I am involved with in any way in my life.

My sisters, niece, and best friend are going to be helping me with all of those tasks and they don't have to buy matching dresses to do it!

Not to knock those of you with bridesmaids in any way - it's nice that you can honor the special women in your lives that way!

I should have kept it simple ! No one is really offering a lending hand and I feel uncomfortable calling them up and telling them to let me a hand. I even sent out a newsletter and no one really responded We'll see. Hopefully, someone will step up when the time comes.

if you don't want BMs, don't use them!

just make sure you have women who are willing to help you that day.

BMs also keep you company when you're freaking out before and during the wedding!

I didn't have bridesmaids either. Perhaps it is unconventional, but I chose not to have any 'maids for several reasons, and I do not regret my choice at all. I wanted to keep things simple, I wasn't having a big church wedding and I just didn't see the point. I had several good girlfriends who threw me an awesome bachlorette party, totally helped out with my shower and dress, etc., and were always there for support, WITHOUT the title of 'bridesmaid.'

It worked for me!

Oh, and I didn't have a maid of honor either! I did have a man of honor, my brother. He's my closest sib, and the person who introduced me and DH. So, why not?

btw, you do need two witnesses to sign your marriage license - typically the maid/man of honor and best man/woman.

Listed below are the duties of one of MY bridesmaids.....

1. Make me feel guilty about EVERYTHING
2. Constantly talk about how 'broke' she is
3. Offers to help with simple wedding tasks such as wrapping favors.... nottttt
4. Accompanys me to fittings for moral support... notttttttttt
5. Asks to hang out and do nothing at her apartment when she knows full well I have 4348219 things to do before my wedding, and doesnt so much as offer to help with anything.

I am dooo dying to know what she is going to be like on my wedding day....

(oh but wait, I shouldnt complain about this stuff should I??)
