Repost from NWR: Question for NYC Teachers

my sister teaches in a Queens middle school.

she told me that they fired 15 teachers + all the lunch aids on the 1st day of school because they had to cut $1 million from their budget to send to Hurricane Katrina victims.

anyone buying this story?? I’m not!

ETA: I am not accusing my sister of lying.... she has nothing to gain by making this up.

I would think that would make the news if it did happen.

What district? Is it a public school? The union would never allow that!
I work in an elementary school in Astoria, Queens.

it's a public school. That's the story they told them on the 1st day. I think it's BS and that they mismanaged the budget!

Re: Repost from NWR: Question for NYC Teachers

Was she working there long?
They must have moved her to another school, right?
The union would never allow that.
What did her chapter leader do/ say?

Re: Repost from NWR: Question for NYC Teachers

It just doesn't sound right.
I have not heard about anything like that and each school does not budget monies for charity. They are given a certain allotment spending on how many students there are.
Where in Queens?

Re: Repost from NWR: Question for NYC Teachers

Doesn't sound right to me.

Wonder what the UFT rep had to say.

DC 37 has a no layoff in their contract so the school aids had to be put somewhere else.

Wonder who is watching the kids at lunch time.
