NWR: I'm depressed. Job Related.
I haven't been depressed about a job since b4 I started working at my new job. Long story short, I made a career change from Fashion Design to Investment banking. I'm an Operations Assistant and just started in the field in February. I love everything abuot my job, except the $$$. Everyone tells me..ohh your young...its ur first job in the field...but I make sooo little!!Today my boss told me she sorta got promoted and now I'm just so upst. I NEED to make more $$, and I don't know how to tell her, bc we are really good friends now....
Anyone have a suggestion??

Can you look for openings in the company for more money? How long have you been there for? If you have been there over a year, you should be able to ask for a raise, whether or not you are friends with your boss.
If you can't get more money where you are now, why not look for another job?

My company is pretty small. The other jobs are higher positions which are alerayd fulled and will be fulled for a long time.I like my job too much..i like everything, except the $$ part. I've been there since February.

Its hard to ask for a raise when you have been there only a few months. Did they tell you when you would be reviewed for another raise?Would you consider going to another company?
I think whats important is that you like your job sometimes its better than more $$$.
Good luck!

If you're friends with your boss I'd certainly ask for a raise. The worst that could happen is she'll say no. Then in February you can ask again. Good luck!!!

May I ask what your position is in ops? I'm a HR Mgr in FL and I also work for a financial company. Most of our operations people are paid pretty low (FL is low paying to begin with) except if they're a supervisor or the head of operations. It does generally help if they get licensed. We give increases for that. Do you have any NASD licensing? In my opinion if you want to stay in the financial business and make $$, the higher paying jobs are going to be in the compliance area or as a rep. With all the new legislation compliance people are commanding much higher salaries and they are very hard to find.

Thank you so much!
I'm an operations assistant..I started in Feb, no experience. I'm hoping to get licensed soon..Do you know how much of an increase you would get for them?
I don't wanna waste the time studying for the hard test, then only have like a 2k raise....I wanna take the tests tho....Thanks!!

if you really feel you are underpaid, maybe it's time to look for something else.even if you get a raise in Feb., will it be enough to make you happy?

Sit down with your friend and explain that you would like to be more valued within the firm and ask her if it would help your income potential if you sat for your series 7/63 etc..Also, you would need the firm to sponsor you to the NASD in order to sit for the test and pay for the licensing. It's expensive. You will also have to take continuing ed classes periodically. This is a sit down over lunch discussion. I think you should do it right away and get it out. Express your desire to have a bigger income potential.
