help me and my living room - w/pics

I hate the way our living room looks. We haven't done much since we moved in almost 2 years ago. We bought the TV armoire and the coffee table. The couch was my sisters and she generously gave it to us. I dont really like it, but we cant afford to buy something new right now. I just hate the way everything looks. The space is pretty small but maybe I need a fresh pair of eyes, any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: help me and my living room - w/pics

My FH has 300+ DVDs (he's nuts, I know) and having them in stacks and all on display annoyed me. To comromise we saved the nice boxes of CDs and DVDs and put the rest away in a case. It saved so much space and opened our room up.

My other suggestion might be a colorful accent rug. I love wood floors, but also love the wood against a rug to warm up a room that has neutral paint.

i was going to suggest an area rug as well. you could also coordinate the area rug colors w/ new throw pillows and perhaps new curtains.

a simple fabric (a design of some sort) tie-backs or tassles on the curtains would really alter the look.

My guess is that you have a slipcover on the couch. I would suggest a new slipcover in a darker color. Still a neutral, but just more of a rich color.

I agree with this. Also and I dont mean this badly, but there is alot of clutter. Looking at your pics I feel like there is so much competing accessories, with the DVDs and all the stuff on top of the TV and every inch of wall has something hung on it. Personally I would go more simple. may clear the top of the TV of everythign and get a nice dried flower arrangement and put some pics up there. Something nice and simple but will help tie your colors all together.

Ikea has great pieces to hold dvds, and they have glass sliding doors, so they look like furniture, not storage! Good luck!

Re: help me and my living room - w/pics

Try Home Depot for area rugs- they are decent looking and if you get sick of them you can throw them away...my parents get 9x12 for about 100-150 but I'm sure that you'll only need something smaller. Also, if you want higher quality- see if you can go to a carpet store (or Home Depot) and have a remnant from a wall to wall install bound and made into an area rug.

I like some of what you have done with candles and wall hangings but I agree that it's a little cluttered. Maybe fewer larger items. Curtains will change the room's look and feel sooo much!! You have a good base to work from tho!
