Weird thing at work today...

Today, in the teachers lounge, one of my co-workers asked me if children were invited to my wedding. I thought this was odd since this is a person I drive home daily who is in fact invited to my wedding with a guest - specifically the man she lives with.

I am only inviting people with guests who live with someone, who are engaged or who are involved in long term relationships. She knew this. I realized she had also been invited, by my sister, to my nephew's Bar Mitzvah in November. (My sister and I teach in the same place). She asked my sister if she could bring her 12 year old son to the Bar Mitzvah instead of the man she lives with. The only reason why 'her man's' name wasnt specified on the invitation was because my sister didn't know it. Thats why it said 'and guest'and SHE KNEW IT. My sister had to refuse the child as a guest because there were other children of co-workers whom she couldnt invite and it wouldnt have been fair to have one and not the other.

My guess is that she asked ME about children at the wedding because she KNEW I'd also say no. I think she assumes that we dont want HER child at our celebrations.

Now can someone tell me why a person would want to bring a child to a wedding who wouldnt know anyone, who would be attached to the mother's side the whole night at a black tie function with NOBODY to talk to but adults? Could this be FUN for a child?

I think that it is just socially off. It isnt like bringing a kid to a backyard BBQ because you cant get a sitter. The wedding ends at 1 am for goodness sake.

Re: Weird thing at work today...

Just tell her children are not invited even though she knows this. Try not to read into why she was asking. Then she will know not even to ask you.

Why would you pick your 12 year old over your partner???????? no babysitter???

She did this on purpose. Another woman in the room winked at her when she asked. There was a method to her madness. It was personal - no mistake.

Re: Weird thing at work today...

That is just too weird for me. So she had discussed it with others! You are definately not crazy here. There are cetain functions were children aren't invited. People should be respectful of the person who is giving the party and not question them.

Re: Weird thing at work today...

People are strange....from what you have said she seems to have other motives for asking about her son. Just keep letting her know other co-workers children are not being invited as well.

Re: Weird thing at work today...

The youngest child sitting down for dinner will be 12 and she is a bridesmaid. The kids her age (all in the BP) are having the same meal choices as the adults. Children under that age get half price meals but I'll be damned if I am going to pay almost $50 bucks so some 12 year old that I don't know can have chicken nuggets and fries. The lil ones in the BP are going home after the cocktail hour. This woman knew all of this.
