I have a great photo printer that I'm very happy with.Epson R200 - and it's pretty inexpensive too I believe $200 or so.
It does require six different cartridges, but they're about $15 each.

Re: What is the best printer to buy for DIY projects?
I just want to say-We just bought this HP printer/fax/copier- it was $100, which is awesome, because the ink is cheaper to refill on an HP.
ANYWAY- I don't think I can even use it at all, because the paper feeds totally 180 degrees to where it prints out. It would totally ruin cardstock.
So I print things at work- don't tell.
I'm also going to start completing all of my posts with this picture, becasue I like wine and cheese. A lot.

Re: What is the best printer to buy for DIY projects?
I have a HP 1310 - it is a printer, scanner and copier. It has a special phto cartridge that has more colors. It prints very nicely with high resolution. The only issue I have had with it is that I found that envelopes got smudge marks on them. I used my old Epson (I forget the model - it has an 8 in it and the printe is about 5 yrs old) to print envelopes. It has a straighter paper path, but the resolution is not as good as the HPs.
I would take the paper path into account when shopping. It makes a difference if you are using any thicker papers.
