Name Change @ Work

I am so clueless...realized by sheer accident the other day that I had only 31 days from the date of marriage to get DH on medical insurance....thank God I looked on day 30! I thought I had to wait for the SS card to come in with my married name before I could do anything but Benefits only wanted a copy of the marriage license. So...now I am wondering...what else can/should I be changing? Can I change my name without the SSN matching my new name? Help

Re: Name Change @ Work

No, you're going to have to wait for your SS card. I work in HR and it's legally required for your I9 documentation, tax forms, etc.
It's possible your company may bend the rules but really you should be required to show your new SS card.

Re: Name Change @ Work

DH has been on my insurance for a while now and I still havent changed my SS card yet. HR only needed my marriage license. Maybe every company has different requirements?

Thanks! That's what I thought but people keep pushing for me to submit the paperwork. I will wait on the SS card to come through for everything else. Just happy to have DH on the insurance.

Now to wait for the SS card...I have no patience...

Re: Name Change @ Work

They are right about the 30 days for the insurance. That's because you can only make changes to your insurance during a 'life event' and the window for that is 30 days. But for everything else (payroll, tax forms, etc.) they are going to need you SS card.

Important to remember this when/if you have a baby as well. If you do not add the baby to your plan within 30 days of birth most plans will not allow you to add the baby until the next open enrollment. I've had lots of unhappy people when they realize that!!

Re: Name Change @ Work

Ive actually changed my last name on EVERYTHING already.. I went to SS last week but havent gotten my card yet. I called all my CC companies and they just took the new last name over the phone (weird!!!) and I didnt even have to provide them with anything! Also, I changed my name with all my banks as well. All they needed from me was my marriage certificate.

Re: Name Change @ Work

Remember to change your deductions and marital status at work.

Also I think it's a good idea to have your paycheck be in the same name as your SS #

When I got married, I changed my name behind the scenes at work, but I kept my maiden name email, etc.

Re: Name Change @ Work

My company let me change my benefits (I added DH to mine) without changing my name first.
