I learned something new today about invitation addressing.
I brought my envelopes for calligraphy today and I have to email them my guest list this week. The sales person told me somethings I didnt know:There is a distinction between how you address the 'guests' of single people:
A single WOMAN invited with a guest is invited as:
Ms. Jane Doe and Escort
A single MAN invited with a guest is invited as:
Mr. John Doe and Guest
All MALES UNDER 16 are invited as:
Master John Doe
All FEMALES UNDER 16 are invited as:
Miss Jane Doe
The word 'Escort' is rather formal and almost sounds like a female guest has to hire someone to go with her to a wedding but I sort of like it!

Re: I learned something new today about invitation addressing.
Sorry I couldn't help you sooner!Lemme tell you something. I have had Crane's Wedding Blue Book next to me for the past 3 months and I still hear different things from different people.
My issue is that I love and appreciate formality to a fault. People think I am nuts to worry and concern myself with this kind of thing. I don't want cute. I don't want 'It's OK.' I want formal. I am asked why I care about hand versus computer if people throw out the envelopes. I tell them 'Because I am the bride and I said so and if YOU aren't paying, keep your big trap SHUT.'

Ew, I think escort sounds scary. I wouldn't want that if I was single!!

Re: I learned something new today about invitation addressing.
Yeah, unfortunately, 'escort' has a negative connotation due to the classy way we like to call prostitutes, but apparently it is proper.

Re: I learned something new today about invitation addressing.
I didn't know about the escort title. If I had a friendwho brought a guest I just put the guests name on the card as well.My nephew got a kick out of being called Master Connor B...!

Re: I learned something new today about invitation addressing.
We are really trying to find out the name of the guests who we are inviting with guests. There are very few. If we cannot touch base with them by the time I email the list to the calligrapher, then we will do the above option.

Re: I learned something new today about invitation addressing.
I did a little research. According to the dictionary, an ESCORT is:1 a (1) : a person or group of persons accompanying another to give protection or as a courtesy
(2) : the man who goes on a date with a woman
Doesn't sound sexist to me. I just think we all associate escorts with hookers and male prostitutes.

Re: I learned something new today about invitation addressing.
IMHO if i received an invitation with escort I would think it's alittle weird. But it probably is the proper way. I put guest on all my invites.

Re: I learned something new today about invitation addressing.
Escort does sound funny to me (because of the prostitute and hooker titles) but if i got one that said that I would assume I wasnt up on etiquette and it was the proper way...THanks for the info!PS-love the Master part
