Is the best man's toast/speech supposed to be a surprise?

I'd like to know beforehand, FH says he doesn't mind it being a surprise. But I think that is just making excuses for the fact that as of right now, BIL has no idea what he is going to say.

I dont' think so. I know FH asked his BM if he wanted to make a speech.

Do you mean you want to know what he's going to say? I don't think you should. You should be suprised!

We were surprised (pleasantly, I might add!) by both my sister's (MOH) and the BM speech.

Re: Is the best man's toast/speech supposed to be a surprise?

we were suprised and everyone did an excellent job.
Although I did hear about one horrible speach - the brother of the groom got up and thanked his new SIL 'for taking his brother and his disease ridden a-s-s off of their parents hands'. It was really bad.

We didn't know what our BM was going to say. I do think that traditionally it is supposed to be a surprise for everyone.

Re: Is the best man's toast/speech supposed to be a surprise?

We had no idea what the BM or MOH were going to say. DH's brother (BM) didn't prepare a speech and totally winged it. It was amazing. I think it would be nice to have the speech be a surprise unless you're worried about what the BM might say.

I think you should be surprised. If you're really nervous about it, get someone close to the best man-- maybe even his mom...lol-- to gently remind him that it needs to be appropriate

We were surprised. Our Best Men did an excellent job. I definitely would not have wanted to hear it beforehand. It was a nice surprise.
