NWR-vent!!!

So we've been in our apartment since July. There is a couple that lives above us that I have yet to meet. The wife walks around the apartment in what sounds like highheel shoes. Mind you all the apartments in this building have wood floors. She is completely oblivious to the fact that it sounds like a heard of elephants when she walks around. And she walks around til about 2 AM.

My problem is how do I go up to a neighbor that i've never met and tell her to stop wearing whatever shoes it is that she is wearing because they make a TON of noise.

One time I woke up and I actually thought there was someone in my hallway, but it was just her walking around.

Do you ladies have any experience in this? It's driving me crazy, but I don't want to come off being rude or put her on the defensive. I'm such a baby, I'm afraid to go up there.

Re: NWR-vent!!!

he doesn't like carpet. my apartment was actually wall-to-wall carpeting and he ripped it out and resanded the floors. he told us that when we moved in.

Re: NWR-vent!!!

there is some law that states that the apartment has to be carpeted to a certain extent. You may have to ask your neighbors above to purchase some area rugs.

Re: NWR-vent!!!

Yes, check your lease. A certain percentage of the floor must be covered. I'm not sure of the percent but it is in a typical NY lease.

Re: NWR-vent!!!

For co-ops I believe 80% has to carpeted. Maybe its the same for apartments.

I would just tell her, IMO its better that you let her know rather then have the landlord talk to her about it.

Re: NWR-vent!!!

I think maybe talk to your neighbor upstairs.

I had 2 situations like this in different places. Neighbor next door played techno music at 7am, so as my bed was shaking. That time I wrote a kind note explaining why this was tough for me. He apologized and stopped.

FH helped with another situation, new building upstairs, guy was actually skateboarding! FH went up and said 'You're not actually skating up here, are you?!' The guy said sorry, and stopped. A music situation with him too, FH said something, and it has been quiet.

Re: NWR-vent!!!

FH had a major issue with an upstairs neighbor and noise (music, blaring until 4am).

He went up and politely asked him to turn down the music; when it happened again, he went to the building super.

You won't come off being rude - you need to sleep and she most likely has no idea how loud she is.
Good luck.

Re: NWR-vent!!!

Welcome to my world-I feel your pain, I hate upstairs neighbors!

The best thing to do is go upstairs and explain that the noise from them walking around is really loud and would they mind removing their shoes or placing a rug down. If they don't listen to you, call the mgmt. office. Make sure to note the time and date you speak to the neighbor about the noise.

With my previous neighbors it was LOUD music over my bedroom at all hours of the night/morning-even M-F. After 3 or 4 requests, I went to the mgmt office. Then it was them rolling around in their computer chair-with no rug on the floor, throwing a basketball, you name it.

I understand this is apt. living, you have to put up with noise, but some people just don't think-you have to be considerate of your neighbors!! We are living in a society here!!

Good Luck!

Re: NWR-vent!!!

I say when it is late like 2am and she is making that kind of noise you just go up there in your jammies or rob or what ever (make your hair messy too) and ask her if she minds keeping it down a little and in a nice way, this is not the best wording, tell her this is not the first time her noise has woken you! I am sure if she is a nice person she will be more than understanding and not offended! I know i wouldnt be, i would thank them for letting me know and then try to be quieter! i have neighbors that run up the stairs like a herd of elephants! and then SLAM their door when they leave or enter! it has woken me up a few times and their door is not close to my bedroom either!

Good luck!!!

Re: NWR-vent!!!

If it makes you feel any better, my landlord who is above us snores so loud it wakes us up... and for a fat 55 year old man, he must be awsome in bed cause when his 'female freind' comes over it wakes up the neighbors!

Re: NWR-vent!!!

We live on the second floor-now there is a third floor but no one above us
One night when you hear her and it is late...if she wakes you up (even better-no offense) just go up and knock on her door-and say hey I live downstairs-I dont want to be rude but could you not hang pictures or hammer things this late at nite? Of course she is going to say Im not-and then say-Oh it sounds like someone is knocking on the walls or the floor.....and see what happens-me I have no qwams (sp?) with this-I am a raving lunatic when I get woken up!

Good Luck!

ETA: Not all neighbors care! It is something that I have learned-as you or I would be very happy to be quiet-my neighbors LOATHE me coming out and screaming at them at 4am.....that is until they got evicted!
