wedding thank yous before wedding

We have already begun to receive quite a few wedding gifts (not married yet). I was under the impression that I would wait until after the wedding to send the thank yous, but some people have called to make sure we received the gift. Anybody have an etiquette check for me?

I believe technically you're suppose to send thank yous before the wedding if you already received the gifts. It's also easier if you can send them out as soon as possible because they tend to pile up. I started sending thank yous out as soon as I received the gifts and am glad I did. I just had my shower and have 50 thank yous to write. The number would be much more if I waited.

Did the people who gave you the gifts specified whether they are engagement gifts or wedding gifts. If they are engagement gifts you should send a thank you, but if they are wedding gifts you can send them after the wedding.

I believe that etiquette says that you should send a thank you as soon as you get the gift, whether you are married or not. This sometimes poses a problem when a B&G want to send a TY with a picture or if you have thank yous done with your married name-Bob & Mary Smith - it would be inappropriate to use those before the wedding. I waited till after the wedding so we could send the picture card. If you want to wait, you might give people a quick call as you receive gifts to let them know it was received and then follow up later with a card.

what I did

I sent my thank yous as soon as I received the gift even though the wedding isn't until 3 weeks. After the wedding, I'm sending them another thank you (ones with the picture) to thank them for coming to the wedding.
